Is anyone seeing the irony how De-evolutionized men are doing music for corporate advertising?

Been to see them live three times -- way in the past. Once on the "Fridays" TV show, once at Universal and once (a revival) at the Raymond in Pasadena.
Mark Mothersbaugh does a lot of scoring (music you pervs). and some painting. Some of his soundtracks: Mark Mothersbaugh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Years ago, I ran into Jerry Casale in Santa Monica and asked "are you not men?" He said "not anymore." I am a proud owner of the Devo Easy Listening cassette...

Can you install external speakers? Cut holes in the Fenders and surface mount them. Devo - Quadraphonic.

Yup, if I looked hard enough I could find a Devo album in the stack of records in the attic. Maybe somewhere near the vinyl tshirt and plastic hat.

Gates of Steel. You ought to be able to do something with that.
Uncontrollable Urge is probably a bad omen for a race car.

I've liked devo since the came out of Akron Ohio in the 70's when i was in high school. They fit into the alternative music that i like so much more then mainstream classic rock that i still dislike. To me, devo kraftwerk, and elvis costello is my classic rock. I just saw them last summer when they came to Pittsburgh. Took my 19 yo daughter who now likes them. Devo is an acquired taste so I'm not going to turn you on to them if you don't like them now. They have influenced many artist today and they are often quoted as being influences along with the pixies, sonic youth, and others. As far as how the sound now....great! Face it, they never had the most challenging vocals or instrumentals so it's not hard to think they can't do it now that they are all well into their sixties. Devo has a good catalog of tunes beyond whip it. What I noticed most about the concert was how unbelievable LOUD it was. They also have great energy and you can tell they aren't faking it for the money like other 80's bands on tours now. Their funny, witty and are having fun. Their lineup is mostly the same also with some minor changes. My favorite song "freedom of choice".

Glad to see other Devoids here.
I think a lot of people who like them also would like the even quirkier They Might Be Giants. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAbZzdalZh4

I was a little skate punk growing up in Souther California in the late seventies. We had heard that DEVO was going to play a free concert at one of our local skateparks, a place called Pomona Pipe and Pool.
They were probably one of my favorite bands at the time along with the Ramones and the Sex Pistols. Rodney Bingenheimer, a local DJ and promoter hosted and DEVO did show up but no one told them they were expected to play and they didn't. They posed for some pictures and got out of there as a near riot ensued, complete with lots of thrown beer bottles. This was probably '78 or '79. Last edited by Jess; 10-11-2011 at 06:06 PM.. |
