Tin toyy Japanese 1963 Jaguar XKE coupe I bought new as a 4th grader for 98 cents at the dime store.
Cool oldest things I've inherited an early 1800's tall standing mantle clock. Great Great Great grandmother brought it down the Ohio in 1831 when the family moved west.
My Grandfathers model 1897 Winchester pump 12 gauge shotgun he bought new in 1904. Shot my first live game a pheasant when I was 11 with it. It became mine shortly thereafter and is still in good shape. A pocket watch from Christmas 65.

Yamaha CA800 amp and a matching CT810 tuner, I bought them new in 1979; they still work great, and look almost like new. Still have the original box for the amp.

The record player in the background belonged to my uncle, he got it new, I believe it is mid '30s. Still works fine.



What I need is a camera. My photos are generally horrible.

Stuff I have personally owned from new that still works - hmm, not much. I have plenty of old stuff but most of it was bought used. I just don't buy much stuff "new".

Let's see.

Canon A-1 camera, bought new in 1976-ish.

Braun coffee grinder, bought new in 1983-ish.

Denon turntable, bought new in 1988-ish.

Krups coffee maker, bought new in 1988-ish. Various Forschner knives, and nice copper pots and pans, circa the same period - not sure if these count.

Bridgestone MB-0 bicycle, bought new in 1992-ish.

That's it.

1906 Winchester .22 pump. Bought it for $75 in an antique store when I was 10 yrs. old and they let me walk out with it.

This was new in 1943/1944 when my grandfather made it for me. It subsequently got quite a bit of use, but not of late. Still has a remnant of the pull string - don't know if it's the original though.

The toaster in our kitchen was given to my parents as an anniversary gift in the 40s. Not sure exactly how old it is as Sunbeam says they don't have records going back that far.

I still have the GI Joes I played with as a kid. Still have the Takaminie guitar my dad bought me when I was 16.

My Pioneer amp/tuner bought at a dept. store back in 1982 with my Dad. It still works but do not use it much. A Silca floor pump that I still enjoy using when I go out for a bike ride bought back in 85. Lots of road bike stuff from the 80s. A little bit of toys from the 70s that still works but none are electric or too mechanical. A small toy truck made in England which sits in my office. It has to be from 71 or 72.

The shots below were taken with an early version of the Nikon Coolpix digital camera. The camera was very primitive, pretty much just a digital memory card with a viewfinder and flash, but because it's so simple it's also pretty much indestructible. I typically gave it to the kids to shoot with at family gatherings, much to the misgivings of adults, but no matter how often it was dropped, stepped on, or sometimes thrown in anger, it kept on ticking. It's retired now - you download pictures from it by plugging it into your PCMCIA slot and nothing I own has one anymore. So ends a career of poorly composed shots of mugging children, adults seen only from the neck down, and close ups of nostrils and ears.

The shots below are me, outside the Rainforest cafe, as seen by my nephew Darius at age 10 on his first visit to Chicago (now on his 2nd tour in the Middle East, far safer ). The others from trips home.

I'm pretty sure they've had some resto work done on them... and they belong to all four of us kids, but the old Lionel SCL F3's and a lot of rolling stock still works... it's all at my BIL's and sister's house right now... they're probably '55 or '56 vintage... found these pics on ebay...



Next oldest would have to be some Craftsman tools in my toolbox... I guess most notably the 1/4" socket set... probably bought them in '72.

The first thing I thought of was The Giant Kenmore Microwave Oven That Will Not Die, about the size of a 20" TV and vintage '77... wedding gift from my first wife's parents. I'm sure everyone has seen one of these and I'd be very surprised if no one here owns one... found this pic with a Google search...

Oldest thing I have owned from new and still have in perfectly functioning condition:
Framus 12 string acoustic guitar. I spent three weeks wages on it in Nov '73. My Yamaha FG 580 is almost as old but I bought it from the first owner.

Oldest thing I own is probably the table/kitchen work station my grandfather made for my grandmother c. 1890. At first the back legs extended through the top board in the back and supported a shelf or two. Later, after something broke, the uprights were sawed off flush with the top.

On the other hand, I have a chest and tools owned and used by my wife's Great-great Grandfather. He had a stamp with his initial and name and used it to stamp most of the planes. c'1850.
