I would be keeping a large caliber gun within reach for some time to come. I agree with your thoughts on it following the scent trail back to your area. Unless your dog put the whoop ass on it. Hopefully it looks worse than him. Have you tried to track the trail back from your house?

i think scout's free range days are over.

congratulate him on surviving. 90% of pet dogs would have been meat. that makes him pretty bad ass.

I told my wife to get the 10mm with trunicated tips out or the 44 hollow points out and keep it handy the amount of blood on the patio was a bunch and it will be a while before that scent goes away and I told her to always turn the light on before opening the door you might not know what is out on the patio. No I am not there to do that or I would have. And I wouldn't have gone unarmed.

Well going unarmed would just be stupid. I'm sure you have better sense than that. Good advice to the wife. I would not leave the dog tied outside at all. That would be like hanging out bait. I would let him out on a leash to do his thing and bring him back in. I think your choice of rounds would do the job. 44 is a bit big for the job but dead is dead. 243, 30, or 308 would do the job nicely. I would go home and take a walk in the woods. Good luck, be careful, it will attack you too without much apprehension. Whatever is out there is probably still out there and I'm sure your dog at least wounded it. That is not a good mix. Don't go alone when you go.

GSD's are one of the best IMO. He was smart and tough to get out of that one. Glad he's going to be ok.

I'm thinking mountain lion. There seem to be plenty of them around. And they will take on large dogs.

i showed these pics to" mr snuggles" and he believes it quite possibly could have been a mtn kitty or possibly a badger. bob katz would run, you dont have wolves there, you would have heard or seen a pack of coyotes, it aint chupacabra, and it sure as hell aint sasquatch. if its a bear.............you have some bigger problems to deal with, and if its either a mtn kitty or a bear, i sure as hell wouldnt be strolling around unarmed. long spoon and a short spoon for that extra measure and a warm fuzzy.

i think you should send $100 for "mr. snuggles bedside ninja class" . this class may be taken via the computer with a bedside manual for self defense to be read before bedtime each night.

another choice would be to get yer dawg into a CCW class ASAP!

me?............................i'd set up some traps around(get trapping/hunting lic.), mention to yer neighbors that you have set out traps and see what ya find. keep yer dawg on a leash and remind close neighbors to do the same.

good luck and glad yer dawg survived.

the only other thing i can think of is wild boars if ya have them and javelinas if ya have them. both can do and will whoop azz on a big dawg when provoked.

If there are free running dogs in the area they can form a pack & attack animals or people. Weird as it may sound several years ago the rural NorCal community that a friend lived in was plagued by attacks by a pack formed from local dogs that ran together. Every one in the area was packing a side arm for a while. Ask around your neighborhood to see if there have been any other incidents.
