Cougar (yeah, go ahead and laugh) sightings are becoming frequent north of Chicago. Forest preserves officials have found tree claw territorial markings and I just learned of someone who caught a picture of one on his deer cam. They still are extremely elusive.

Other interesting sightings at the fringe of Chicago is the occasional grey wolf. Coyote is very common but a grey wolf is another matter. I might be incorrect of the exact year, but thinking it was 2007 they put down a grey wolf at a State park, northwest of Chicago and is now on display at the rangers / main park office. Oddity as they're purely pack animals and this must have been a stray.

Just this week, they started the wolf kill in Wisconsin. Supposably to take a 1/4 of the population or a couple hundred.

I'm glad your dog is going to be OK, this could have turned out much worse... He's a good dog, for sure!

The wife brought him in the house for a meet and greet with the rest of the family and I would have liked to be there she said the cats hissed and scattered the maltipoo just stood there and shook and the border collie hunkered down and growled. I guess not bad for the first time in the house oh and he went to the middle of the room and hiked his leg proclaiming this is my territory.

Well they are talking about Scout around the little towns. A person my wife works with told her today that he heard a couple farmers talking about a dog killing a cougar. I think this is funny .

Well I have more of the story. Scout had to go back to the vet again today he is touch and go and what the vet found made me sick to my stomach! I turns out the dead cougar was a coincidence after all unless the attack caused this to shift and the vet said that was a possibility because it still looked like an animal attack to him but last night a large abscess developed on his back and it was discharging a bloody mess so the vet went back in to look for more and he found a deer slug lodged against his spine that caused the abscess. I asked the vet if that could have caused the damage we saw around his tail and he said it was possible but he should have been crippled if not dead if that was the cause. So anyway he removed the slug and now I am on a search for who the POS was that shot my dog in the a$$ while he was running away and if it is who I think it is when his dogs come back on my property which is often they will be dead dogs! I am asking now what course of action I should take because they let their dogs run which is not illegal in anyway but they shot my dog when he simply just got off his chain.

A deer slug!? I would think a deer slug would do a whole lot more damage. To stop a round like that, it would have to hit some pretty solid piece of bone and there would be massive damage. Never the less, I hope your dog makes a full recovery.
I would be very careful about confronting your suspected neighbors about this or killing their dogs.

I hope it is your anger talking and that you think twice about killing dogs of someone you suspect. Even if the humans you suspect are the ones that shot your dog, the dogs have done no harm and do not deserve to die.

I hope your dog makes it and has a full recovery.

The law in Missouri and this was stated by the conservation agent is that if the animal is on your property it doesn't even have to be threatening can be shot by me simply put. I have a plan to see if the person that shot him will admit it to one of my and his neighbors. I see it this way you are right the deer slug would have done much more damage if he had been shot on the a-holes property Scout would have been dead at that range so he not only shot him off his property but he shot the dog in the a$$ which meant he was running away from him. He came from the north which makes sense that it was these people I just wish I was there so I could have followed the blood trail back to find out where he got hurt.

Yes there is anger talking here BUT these same dogs have chased my daughter while she was riding her bike and know if I did it, it would be because it has been confirmed by his own admission and he would have the option to lock up his dogs because these same dogs have growled at me on my property.

Poor scout. Any update on his health? Maybe the slug was a long range shot.

Got a call from the vet he is awake and alert the slug is out he has a lot of drain tubes in. If it was a long range shot then it was illegal the guys property is not that big and even more despicable since scout was obviously going away from him when he shot him.

Is it possible that someone witnessed the dog vs big cat confrontation and shot at them intending to hit the cat and not the dog?

A deer rifle on an 80lb dog, interesting lack of penetration, and damage to hips and such. Also, the vet detailed incisor and claw wounds. Possibly it was simply a single gunshot wound, however there may be more to the story.
