I believe what we are being told by the law is that since he shot him in the butt the burden of proof is on the shooter that the dog was being aggressive which we have the testimony of our dog trainer that this is not an aggressive dog

... clarification to the law is the dog has to be on the property threatening before he can legally shoot a dog so shooting him in the butt would be an illegal shooting unless he can produce the damage done by my dog...

How do you prove or disprove that the neighbor felt threatened?

Good luck with Scout and glad he's doing better. What a bizarre story.

You are absolutely right this is a bizarre story and I am glad we still have our dog. Our first priority is to train him to not leave the property which should be easier now that he is neutered

I thought I would update this thread that Scout finally came home 3 days ago from a long stay at the vet and 4 surgeries and a bunch of infections and he is now happily at home and terrorizing the other animals and he can actually wag his nub so all is good. No idea who it was that shot him but scout the other day was looking at the suspect house and barking up a storm we can just see it from our property.

I love a story with a bad twist that has a happy ending (as happy as it can be after the pups demise)

It's great to hear that the pups on the mend. I'm not a violent guy, but I'd have a big problem with someone shooting my dog. I'm not sure what I'd do.

Scout is doing well and we now have a wireless fence and am starting the training for it. I had numerous people tell me that if you train him properly he will stay inside the boundary.

Some dogs will just grit their teeth and run through it.

Also, it will only keep your dog in, not other dogs out.

Final chapter in Scouts saga. He ran off again one morning didn't go far but scared the bejesus out of us so the wireless fence got turned on at level 2 shock and he only challenged it twice and hasn't challenged it since even when there is a bird or squirrel on the outside of the fence. He just got back from a check up at the vet they wanted to see how he healed up. He got a clean bill of health heart worm negative and all the wounds healed and he has put on 15 lbs. He is a happy healthy and very protective dog of all 3 of us. Just a side note the people we suspect shot him come up behind us on the road the other day with Scout in the back and his reaction told volumes and as soon as they realized he was in the vehicle they backed way off so we know who shot him and they know we know.
