We do have bears in our area but I don't think the dog would have survived a bite from a bear. The vet ruled out any animal coyote and smaller because of an incisor puncture wound he found in his back after he got him cleaned up, he said it was quite large and leads me to think medium sized cougar. The thing that gets me is Scout must have sensed the danger and went out to meet it head on yes I care about all my animals dearly but Scout protected my family and has my love and gratitude. I am sure my border collie would fight to the death if cornered but I don't think she would actually go meet it before it got to the family.

Ok I see what a javelina is same as farther south they have razorbacks in Arkansas but I don't think we have any wild pigs this far north in Missouri but it would certainly have a big enough tusk to make the puncture wound but I don't think they have a strong enough bite.

Missouri? I'd say mt. lion or panther. There was a unpublisized release of panthers in Illinois a few years ago. This is certainly in their range.

I don't think I'd do that. Cougars may be protected up there. These morons in Florida protect the stupid things down here. If you can't hunt them, they lose their fear of people.

Ran into my ex-gf tonight - described the injuries - and she said Cougar.

Then she asked what vet (she knows them all in Mizzou) and I said "How do I know?"

Give Scout a cookie from the girls..

Are you sure about that? I thought wolves were being reintroduced into the wild in some states in the US. Could/would they cross state lines? And it's been documented that they do attack and kill domestic animals.

I guess anything is possible the conservation agent we contacted told us that our neighbors up the road have been cornered having exotic wild animals on the property without the proper permits and my wife told me that her hairdresser who has a ranch also close to our house said that a big cat was killed or found dead between Leeton and Calhoun of which our house is right in the middle as the crow flies. I just asked my wife what exactly she said happened and she said it was found dead and the assumption was it got hit by a car. I am thinking this is an interesting story an I guess it is possible that Scout gave as good as he got and he had the ability to get home and get first aid whereas a big cat (they didn't say what type) wouldnt have had that and would have bled to death. I don't know we are looking into it. That would be cool if our GSD killed a cougar or even a large bobcat.

VERY interesting indeed...sounds like good fit. WHEN was the cat found? In your time frame?

So it's likely your dog fought off and mortally wounded a Cougar!

I'm impressed.

Glad he made it home okay.

I suggested contacting fish and game for a couple of reasons. More eyes on the ground, to raise awareness in the vicinity of the attack, and to let F&g know that your intentions are to defend and protect the homestead against a potentially lethal attack.
As far as the predator being protected,I would hazard a guess that the powers that be would be less inclined to press charges after a documented attack.
Good boy,Scout,heal well and fully

The conservation agent was very evasive about cougars being in the area he even told my wife she was mistaken when she told him she saw one. I guess it would be bad for them to have large predators that close to population. The time frame fits as it just found in the last day or so. The agent stated the same law I did to my wife and also expanded that did apply to any animal on our property.
