Photo Sites
Photo Sites like Flickr
Explain the benefits, and which one is the best. I've heard a lot of people using these. I have a ton of pictures both mine and others that are overwhelming me.

I use flickr (link at the bottom of this post). Easy to use and free for the first 200 pictures uploaded. They are owned by Yahoo. You can join groups and favorite others photos. You can hide your photos or restrict them to only friends allowed to see them or share them with the public. I've been contacted from folks around the world to use my photos in books and websites.
I would think most photos sites offer the same things.

Flickr is kind of like facebook but much more focused on photos and less on chit-chat and politics. I like it. It is a way to backup my photos and is convenient for sharing them. I have also met quite a few people through it, some very far away and some that live somewhat nearby and whom I have since met in person with.
I had a photobucket account because they give you a http address for the photos so you can use the IMG code to insert pictures, but flickr has an embed feature kind of like youtube so it is just as good and I dropped the photobucket. Flickr does videos with a 90 second limit. Flickr also offers Aviary which is an editing program. I can't comment on whether it is good or not since I don't usually do editing beyond cropping and sometimes brightness and contrast adjustment, but it seemed a lot better than the Microsoft Picture Viewer editing program that I used to use. I think Aviary is only available with "Pro" level membership (which I have). If you get the Pro membership you get unlimited storage space. I don't remember how much the Pro level costs. $25 I think. One of the things I like best about Flickr is the Sets and Collections that you can make to organize photos. You also have titles, descriptions, and the comments that you and others can leave on the photos.

I think the main benefit though is as a backup for your digital photos, and the ability to share the photos on Pelican without uploading here and forcing Wayne to buy more hard drives. You can also post a higher-resolution photo or larger photo here because it is hosted off-site.

Webshots photo site is closing 1st December 2012
Received this email a few days ago I've stored photos there for over 10 years! Dear John , Webshots has been acquired from American Greetings and the original founders are introducing a new service called Smile by Webshots. Smile by Webshots is an innovative photo management service for today’s modern family – helping you store all your photos, find your memories and effortlessly share life’s moments with the people you are closest to. We are transferring your membership plus your photos and videos to Smile by Webshots. Just log in by December 1 using your Webshots member name: ******* (and password) to confirm your account and get started. IMPORTANT: the current Webshots site will be going away as of December 1. If you do not want to come over to Smile, please download and save your photos to your desktop or anywhere else you choose. Sincerely, The Smile by Webshots Team PS. For more information, read the details of the transition or go to Help. Sent by Threefold Photos, Inc. 200 Tamal Plaza #200 Corte Madera, CA, 94925, USA. View our privacy policy. You may Unsubscribe at any time if you prefer not to receive emails. ====== The origional team have done an MBO and started Smile-Webshots (new platform and new software) and have provided download facilities for your pictures - but safety means downloading everything and deciding whether the new offering is suited to your needs. Any pic locations (like the ones given to relatives/forums etc) become invalid on 1/12/2012 I have about 6500 pics on there. Naturally I have backups as well but it just goes to show that any of the web depositories are vulnerable. Webshots was one of the biggest photo storage sites in the USA. These are my stats for public folders on Webshots overall Photos 6381 views 806642 downloads 8147 The site contains 692 million photos !! __________________

Great Info
I have heard the most about Flickr, I met one of the Nikon factory Guys a couple weeks ago that was using it to show his pictures. It was pretty cool. What would be the yearly charge for 5000 pics ? I may try the free account just to check it out.

There is only a flat rate for the Pro version. It doesn't change with number of photos.

Photobucket. It's free and works (well, most of the time).

I use fototime.com and am very happy with them. It's something like $24 per year for more space than I was able to use until recently. I probably had 1000 photos up there before I had to buy more space and then they doubled it for no add'l. charge. They're great for ordering prints too, dirt cheap.

Photobucket. It's free and I'm not aware of a limit on the number of pictures.

One thing to consider is if you just want to host images or if you want nice photo albums to share with others.

The ones mentioned here all have their pros/cons. For free hosting, Flikr is probably the best all-round option IMO. SmugMug is hard to beat if you are considering a pay-to-play option. For its intended niche/approach, 500px is growing on me as well. The common restriction among most of the free sites sites is going to be image size/resolution (along with the number of images/data storage limits). If you want to upload hi-res photos, you are probably going to have to pay for it.
Also, if you go with a free site just be mindful of their TOS (as it relates to image usage/ownership/rights/etc.). Last edited by Eric Coffey; 11-12-2012 at 11:42 AM.. |

Flickr also has a "no holds barred" setting if you so desire. If you know what I mean, wink, wink. Just thought I'd throw that out there...
