How do you guys feel being in someones home who has cameras?

Not sure how I feel about this one so I thought I'd throw it at the PP brain trust.

Wife and I headed over to some friends house the other night for dinner and while chatting in the living room, I noticed my buddy has put up an IP camera. It was not in the open, but also was not hidden at all. I am familiar with those kinds of cameras but I would think anyone would realize it was a camera if they looked, but could possibly not notice it unless pointed out.

I asked him about it and he said he bought it on a whim for a good price and threw it in before they went on vacation. He said it was part security, partly so they can check on their animals, and partly he just wanted to be able to look in on his house when they weren't home.

I never gave it a second thought until he mentioned that his parents stayed at the house for a couple days while they were gone since they were in town to visit his sis-in-law and they dont have an extra room. Anyways, he mentioned that his dad was a little upset after they got home and my buddy mentioned the camera to his dad. His dad felt they should have been told about the camera before their visit.

My buddy said he did not install it to spy on people and he only got it up about a week before they left, but he probably should have mentioned it. It has the ability to record but he hasn't set that up yet, so he only see's when he logs in remotely.

I guess I'm not sure how I would feel in his/his dad's position. It's my buddy's house and he can do what he wants and I'll be damned if I left someone tell me what to do in mine, but being on camera is an awkward privacy thing. Its not like the camera was in the bathroom or bedroom which is why it didn't bother me, but then again I know about the camera now and am not sure how I would feel if I was told after the fact when I had stayed some place.

What do you guys think?

personally, i already have an issue with all the cameras out in public. if i knew a friend of mine had cameras in his house, i'd choose not to go there. YMMV, etc.

As a guest in someone's home I don't do anything that I would have an issue with them seeing, be it on camera or in person. Unless it's in the bathroom, in which case I'd seriously wonder why hell was wrong with them.

I know multiple people with WiFi cameras for security purposes. I've never given it a second thought.

If I put myself in a position where I would be embarrassed by something a camera captured, shame on me. Integrity is something that shows regardless of whether you're being watched or not. Short of one placed in a private area like the bathroom, I don't have a problem.

Now, if they capture sound, that's illegal in Illinois.

Given that I consider cameras in public inappropriate you can imagine how I feel about this moron.

You can't have your parents at your house and not tell them you are monitoring the place with a camera. Everyone should have their privacy in a private setting, including your house, if they stay there as guests.

I don't have an issue with cameras in public places. There's no expectation of privacy.

But like G says above, you expect privacy (i.e. to not be secretly filmed) inside a house. I'd be extremely pissed if someone had secret, or semi-secret, cameras rolling in a house that I was a guest in.

In my state, it's illegal to record a conversation w/o consent. Camera should only be on when he's away and wants it for security purposes IMO.

I have security cameras OUTSIDE only. Any camera could be hacked and you could be watched by someone and never know.

I set up a camera for our dogs for a short time just to see what they do in while locked up in the laundry room. They mostly slept.

How did your dogs feel about being spied on without their consent?

I would be pretty pissed if I wasn't told they were there so my wife and I would know to go in the other room for fun time.

If I knew they were there I would probably limit ball scratching, nose picking, etc.

There are things you do in private which are not considered "misbehavior". I feel sorry for you if you do not do these things reasonably frequently.

i find it interesting that people have no issues about there being so many cameras in our public lives.

Couldn't you get them to wash a load or two for you? Or at least take care of the folding. I hate folding.
