I still kick myself for not checking out a really nice original 1st gen that was for sale locally, I think it had under 60k. I ended up not looking because I knew I would want it, I think it was all of $4k.

Why is it so hard for those GM designers to get the tail end of this car right? Where's Radu when you need him?

Like discussed above, the reason the tail end is a Crapmaro piece must be marketing / branding. We probably will see that same look on every other Chevy car down to the Cruze. I have read in the past that GM lost money on the Vette but believed it made up for it on the other cars which are more attractive to buyers because they are of the same make.

Yup. I recall reading that in one of the articles, used to create common themes between the models. Make the car ugly because the marketing guy said so. Here's the 2013 Malibu rear with square lights:

The more I look at that new 'vette, the more hideous it is. I don't care if it goes 400mph and does 0-60 in 1 second, it's a POS to me.

The only new car I've ever owned in my life, if you can believe it, was supposedly the very first Mazda RX-7 sold in Minnesota in 1979. Can't remember actual month, maybe fall of '78(?)

Anyways, silver w/ black interior, all options except auto trans, (it was a 5-speed). Fun car and zero issues from the very first copy sold.

I have to say that I don't like any new cars much in terms of their styling (which I guess they are trying to call "design" now).

Maybe the classic forms were all discovered in the 1960s and avoiding those since has simply meant a deterioration in looks...
