Would you eat that?

So I cut into my apple only to find it rotting from the inside out. I was a little put off at first, but then I thought I'd cut away the bad part and assess what was left. Yep, I ate the good part. It was fine. I'm fairly pragmatic that way.

Ummm. As a kid I loved eating apples. But... along came the cool store. Now when you buy apples they could be twelve months old - yuk. As I'm guessing this one is.

For me to eat an apple it has to be crisp, crunchy, and fresh off the tree.

I eat A LOT of apples. Most days that I work I eat 1-3 apples. I find that if the apple is split up around the stem that it often tastes bad throughout. I'll eat around an apple with a bad bruise, and I've also gotten apples where on the second bite I see that the center it starting to turn a color, but the apple still tastes fine. I'll eat around bad spots if the apple tastes ok.

If I had cut into an apple that looked like yours, I'd have thrown it out because it looks horrible. Maybe I'm lucky that i don't cut them to eat them. It's possible that I've eaten several that would have looked like that if I cut them.

Hmm, I wouldn't have any idea of the apple would taste different straight from the tree.

I suspect it's partially in your imagination. They've been keeping some fruits and vegetables long term for a LOOOONG time. My uncle was in the fruit business all of his life. He started with his dad taking him to work when he was <10 during the summer when school was out. He's 78 now. For a long time, he worked as a govt fruit inspector. He's told me some fascinating stories.

Steve, is your apple intake predicated on the number of doctors you want to keep at bay? I am dubious about the effectiveness of that whole apple a day program, but am open minded.

There is a place near hear called Apple Hill, aptly named, because they grow a lot of apples there. If you like apples as much as it sounds like you do, you ought to take a trip up the hill if you are ever in Northern California when the apples are getting ripe.

Would I cut the bad part off an apple and eat the rest, no. I would do that on a peach, every single time

If'n I was hungry enough, sure, after cleaning it up a bit.
Then I might even eat that big green leaf.

No, no worm inside: I checked for that bonus protein
I was at work and wanted to have something to tie me over until lunch, so either I clean it up and eat it or make a short trek to a food outlet (or starve)

I do the same thing... usually after my 12 year old daughter has thrown something like that away. Then I get "Ewww!" because I ate it and extra "Ewww!" since I pulled it out of the trash. The next day I point out to her that not only am I still alive, but that I didn't even get a little sick. Doesn't seem to impress her.

I can afford to throw out a whole bag of apples but somewhere in the back of my head I can still hear my mother's voice saying "there are children starving in Africa..."
Cut the bad part and eat the rest.

The brown oxidation, no problem.
Cook it up for a caramel ice cream topping or pancakes.

The blackened fungus makes me a little nervous, but we've been eating similar in expensive cheeses for a long time.

yes, minus the black bits and the mushy brown part-
oddly I pay more attention to who I sleep with then the condition of my apple-

I eat a lot of apples, and usually munch up the entire thing - core, seeds, stem and all.

I'd be careful doing that...next thing you know you'll be a dapper dresser and whinneying "Wilburrrrr" . From my perspective, I could be starving, wearing thick beer goggles at 2 am closing time and I'm still gonna pass on that apple...

Discussion about a slightly rotten apple was not what I expected when I opened this thread.
A spin off of " Aging Gracefully " was my thought process.

After that "Adam & Eve" thing in the "Garden of Eden" I am VERY skeptical of apples in general. I give a sideways look at snakes also.
