Just passed a kidney stone.
@ Cedars Sinai ER. Started about 10pm, I toughed it out at first but eventually got here. I've had the flu for a couple days so I didn't know WTF rolled up my alley at first, just severe abdominal pain.
Long story short, got my neighbor and buddy who happens to drive an ambulance for a living to drive me here. No way I could have driven and wasn't sure if insurance covers LA city fire ambulance rides, yes they do send you the bill. Spent about an hour in waiting room moaning in pain, then a particularly sharp pain followed by relief. I've had one once before 20+ years ago and know the symptoms well. Almost just got up and went home but figured I might as well have urine checked to confirm. This is some crazy-ass pain when it's happening, boys and girls. |

Ideally, they should have put you on a hospital bed or gurney, with an IV med to make the pain disappear... even a short-acting injection of Talwin would have been an incredibly huge help. Emergency rooms, and pain management, are not what they should be.

I feel your pain, really. Had my first and hopefully last stone about 5 years ago. When that stone passes it's like a new day. They should analyze the stone and give you some dietary advice. Drink lots of water. It's the cheap kidney stone medicine. Get well soon.

Thanks a lot. I'm still here at ER, I'd feel fine if I did not still have the flu.

Drink much water?
Have gout symptoms and/or Crohns? Have high calcium levels? (Hyperparathyroidism) . I would go see a Doc. . ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ . I ask/suggest because my PCP noticed high calcium level back in 2011 > tested for overactive Parathyroid > Thyroid cancer. Just had my Thyroid removed last month. Presently on my 3rd day of Radioactive Iodine Uptake Test. HTHs.

First time I had a stone, I thought that I had been shot. I really did look in the mirrow to see if I had a bullet wound.
Glad you are doing better now. |

I sympathize. I have had 2 kidney stone attacks - without passing one - in the last 4 months. Not fun.

Get your serum uric acid (SUA) checked. Kidney stones are caused by the same thing (uric acid) as gout and you'll want to keep that count low or this will (may) happen again. Get better soon!!

I feel your pain. I had one 30 years ago, first and last. Had to have an op to get it out. I said to my urologist "what did you put up there?" He said "a telephone pole!"
I peed blood after recovery. The actual attack I agree with you is bad. Drink lots of water. |

Stones are very painful! Oxycodone took the pain away for me, too bad you did not get any pain meds.
Did you get the stone? It should move into your bladder (probably what relieved the pain) and then pee out (they may give you a mesh cup to pee through). Analysis of the stone can determine the cause and suggest dietary or other changes. |
