"is my dad being too overprotective?"

Did you mean to say 14 instead of 24?

I was probably harder on my Daughter than my Son in terms of getting her to embrace independence at a young age.

She is only 20 but goes to college across the country from us, has driven across the country with a friend twice, flies back and forth, goes to riding events all over the west by herself, etc.

I wanted a tough, independent thinker and mover, able to fend for herself as soon as reasonable.

So I hired Speeder...he works wonders

Well, Vancouver is a hub for sex trade trafficking to the Orient... just sayin.

Where's that Vandersloot guy these days?

In all seriousness, none of the folks here are gonna tell you that you are being reasonable, because they've raised perfect children into adventurous, independent adults without a single issue. The truth is that no one knows your daughter better than you do, so you should absolutely do what you feel is best, and react to her needs, as she expresses them.

If by 24 she has not learned the ways of the world and how to be responsibly in possession of a vageen, she never will.

Either way.........

24 is way too old for apron strings....... she has to go live her own life, and will. There is nothing you can do about it, so relax and go live yours.

Oh yeah and Vancouver???????

YOU KNOW that city is chock full of Anglo-Canadians, right????????? hell they wouldn't say "****" if they had a mouth full!!

What are you worried about? Has she done something in the past to make you question her judgement?
If her company trusts her to go and respresent them, shouldn't you?

Yes.

give her the p car and let her drive there herself. She might pick up a hitch hiker or two herself. Beautiful drive BTW. I have done it twice.

In all seriousness, she is 24. I flew with female Navy pilots who were younger, off of ships at sea.

Unless there are problems the OP is not willing to discuss, 24 year-old people, in my world, are free range.

Go, git, scram, skedaddle.

Totally agree, and my daughter left home at 18, which was earlier than both her older brothers. However, my experience is mine, and his should be his. I certainly wouldn't put my comfort level on someone else, when I didn't raise that child.

My parental advice (which is too late for the OP), is to teach your child as early as possible to cultivate that inner voice that warns of danger, and heed it, always. Go ahead and be adventurous, and do dangerous things, within reason, and learn from them. Heed a threshold that prevents death and calamity.

In all seriousness, unless there is something about the young lady that the rest of are not aware of, it is unusual to be concerned about a grown adult traveling to a relatively safe place. Some people are sharper about staying safe than others, but no one worries about traveling to major cities in the civilized world unless the traveler has special needs(?)

If that is the case, we should not be joking about it. But you've indicated nothing of the sort. You would do her a service to teach her more independence at this point unless she has special needs and therefore cannot travel alone.

I've been to Vancouver and holy christ, that is one white-bread freaking place. Maybe Chinese-bread, but you get my drift.

Yeah, I think Vancouver is about as safe as it gets. By the time I was 24, I had hitchiked all over Europe many times, including some recently free east bloc countries. My mom probably worried once in a while, but my dad never did. They didn't think twice about encouraging me to be an exchange student when I was 16.

I need to look into this for my kids (a few years down the road, yet). I think it would be an absolutely amazing experience for them. Got any useful info to dish out?

Best thing I ever did. I still regulary visit friends from that first trip, went to the 20th class reunion in Germany a few years ago and am now friends with the grown kids of an Austrian woman I met when she was an exchange student in my town when I was 13. I've visited her and her whole family at least 20x. AND I was kicked out of the house by my host family when I was first there. That's the second best thing that ever happened to me because the second family was orginally from E. Germany and that opened a whole new door and many friendships I still maintain. And I'm still close with that first family and their kids and their kids' kids.
