Way back when it was believed cigarettes helped "open the lungs". How that even remotely felt good/healthy I can't fathom. After a 50 or 60 mile bike ride I think a cigarette would make me puke, then die.

Yeah, and no support crews (note the spare tires carried by all), derailleurs were illegal, and on and on. It was truly a "tour" back in the day. No outside support allowed - get on your bike and ride around France. Good luck.
Men were tougher in so many ways back then.

I did a few MS 150 rides back when I was into mountain biking. I would grab a smoke break at rest stops. The road rider guys who I went with were picking on me at the first stop about how bad that was. I never saw them again after the first break. I was hours in front of them at the end of both days.
