Looking for a new spoon

I seriously would love to have one of these:



I have shot them and they are smooth, tight and accurate. I love the 1911 platforms and I like the looks of this specific model but I have a hard time justifying the price. The probelm is that if I get a lessor one it will bother me that it may not be as accurate as I am (not that I am great, but I am better that a lot of the guns I have shot at 25 yards). The Raptor II will group under an inch at 25 yards so when I miss I know it is me.

So, who else makes an accurate one that isn't plain but also not that expensive or where a good place to purchase one. Somewhat local shops are nearly $1500. My BiL has a Remington that shoots almost well but was nearly as expensive and is a plain brushed stainless.

I would be OK with a well cared for used one.

I've shot some of the SIG 1911 variants and they're pretty damn nice and can usually be had for a few hundred less.

Other end of the spectrum, Wilson makes beautiful stuff that's laser accurate. Of course it would be a screaming deal to get even a decent one used for 1500

I know of a Les Baer Premier II up for sale in AZ for $1600. Looks to be in excellent condition from the photos I have seen.

I would take a beat-to-hell-and-back Les Baer over a new Kimber. Actually, I would take ANY brand 1911--good condition or otherwise--over a new Kimber. If it says "Yonkers, NY" on the frame, it's a new Kimber.

Clackamas editions are a different story. Those were fine spoons.

As for "nice-looking", if you're in the market for a pimped-up 1911, the S&W 1911SC line is really nicely put together, with fish-scale-like slide serrations etc. The SIG line is also really nice. If you're looking for a more traditionally pimped 1911, consider a TALO Colt if you can find one.

I don't know if I want it pimped as much as I get tired of seeing all the brushed stainless/brown or blued/brown everywhere.

Wilson and Les Baer are really nice, but way out of my price range. I've shot some Kimbers, talked with Kimber owners and the bggest issue is when they want to the external extractor for a while. I would love to find one from the original company and factory but they tend to command a pretty hefty price as well.

I will check into the S&W model. Haven't had but one issue with their guns and they took care of that pretty well for me. (Bent firing pin on a revolver and they replaced just about all the moving parts when they had it.) I wanted to buy the M&P but just didn't enjoy shooting it as much.

I just bought the Ruger SR1911 late last summer. Best 1911 I have ever owned, bar none. They are now where Kimber started in this market, having pulled a "Kimber" on Kimber themselves. Not just a good 1911 for the money, but one of the best out there. Undercut everyone on price while making the best example currently available outside the (vastly over priced) custom shops.

I hae been very pleased with my Kimber Custom Shop, once the whole external extractor issue was resolved. I have also had very good customer service.

How is the trigger on your Ruger? I absolutely hate the triggers on their P9x series but think the 10/22 is a great gun for the money.

If you're looking for accuracy, buy an old Colt and have it tuned by Karl Lippard.

I really like my Springfield Milspec. Nicely made and reliable. They sell some "built" options that are far less than a Kimber.

STI are another option. There is one called the STI Spartan that has all the STI competion excellence but at a more budget price.

I use a gunsmith built Springfield with a six inch barrel and I'm happy with that.

That new Ruger is on my list. But I honestly like Springfields best for the money. My dream 1911 is a SA TRP and they are under $1400 new. I have owned two of the SIG 1911s and I'm not real impressed with the fit and finish, though they were accurate and comfortable to shoot.

Get an 80% frame and go full do it yerself custom

I've been seeing good prices for the double stack Paras at the last few gunshows...

There are reasons for that. Para has had some serious quality and CS issues in the past few years.

I would look at the Dan Wesson 1911 and the Ithaca as well. Both have the best triggers of any of them, and they are both made from machine steel. A lot of gun for about the same money.

That's what I heard too. The story I got told was one of the STI guys returned to the Philippines for family reasons and found he could work with STI but with much lower labour costs. The philipinos have been making quite good guns for years, so the know how is there.
