I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I am getting tire of all this senseless violence going on in the world today. Can't understand it. Crazy people. The eastern seaboard seems to be all stirred up. Don't know how people stand it.

I had this discussion a little while ago. Violence has always been with us and always will be, of course, but I have become open to the possiblity that there is actually less violence nowadays. I'd be interested in reading some accounting of human violence over the span of history. I'm sure the data is out there.

As a kid years ago I played cowboys and indians, cops and robbers, army, etc with my friends. Plastic guns or "weapons" cobbled from my buddy's dad's wood scraps. We killed each other hundreds of times over. The same games have been played for generations. For whatever reason we humans have an attraction to violence, though the vast majority of us are stable enough to not act on it. I think on average we are probably safer today than we have been in decades, unfortunately there are a few loonies that come unhinged in very public ways.

My elderly friend Tom whom I joked with a week ago about being called up again for Korea, said it's more complicated these days. He exaggeratedly looked left and right and said it's more of a hidden enemy these days and one that is all around us. At the time he didn't know how correct he was in regard to the young Chechnyan (chechnyan born) guys in Boston.

You guys have to be kidding. Religious beliefs have, and always will create battle grounds. It's the base. The surroundings of those beliefs creates an even more complex problem.

Violence is as American as apple (cherry?) pie. A couple of indices are the amount violence in media and our stockpile of 300 million guns. The misguided reformation of mental health treatment coupled with the failure to adequately fund mental health care hasn't helped.

Exactly. By most any measurable standard, we are living in the least violent times in the history of man.

Like others have said media makes it easier to hear about ALL the violence in the world, but also consider how we fight now; in the past (for the most part) it seemed we fought face to face, now the crazies use remote violence then run and hide so as not to face the music of what they have done.

I suspect that this is the same issue many in third world counties have with US drones. That argument falls apart for me when these same people wouldn't consider putting on a uniform to fight.
