Foose has two "looks".
Two tone and surprised. The dude always looks surprised.

I think some of you guys are confusing "Overhaulin" with "Pimp My Ride", "West Coast Customs", or some other crap. I've never seen headrest monitors or silly stereos on Overhaulin. Foose definitely has a theme, but he does change things up depending on the car and owner. I've seen some episodes that result in a very mild custom build, and some that are pretty out there. Normally I like the end result with the exception of the wheels, I personally can't stand the trend of putting oversized wheels and low profile tires on old cars. Anything bigger than 16" risks looking goofy in my opinion.
While I also question the ability to turn out a quality product in a week, they definitely use quality products. I've never seen them drop in a high HP big block without also upgrading the suspension, brakes, and transmission. If you guys are expecting them to do a totally stock restoration, you're missing the point of the show. He can stop by my house and steal one of my cars anytime.

I don't think it is really fair to judge Foose based on his work on the show. He has won some of the most prestigious automotive awards in history multiple times. You don't get those for being a hack.

Well, yeah. I was at Cars & Coffee a couple years back and Foose Sr was standing by a new car he'd brought. I said something like 'a two-tone Foose car! Who'd have imagined.'
The looks I got from the group were priceless. Deadly, but priceless. Chip is one of the truly nice guys in the business. He's kind of an OCD type. Aside from the predilection for 2-toning, he does some really brilliant restyling. However, I think he may be locked into a specific era of styling memes. As Overhaulin is a product promotion show, he may not have a lot of choice in the brand of parts he installs. It's all paid placement. And, yes, Joe, I've seen AJ in person, and she holds up under close scrutiny.

Too big to fail

Nope. He took a nice, dry, original bus and made a mess out of it.
If anyone else had done something like this, we'd fun of them, but when Foose does it, it's somehow 'awesome' ![]()

The nice dry bus was a barely running heap when Foose got it. When he was done it was a rust free bus with a show quality paint job, completely new drivetrain, new brakes, new wiring, and all new chrome. Then it went right back to the original owner who never could have afforded to all of this to his pride and joy. The owner certainly appreciated all the effort that went into his bus. Even if you don't care for his style Foose seems like a pretty genuine guy. Since he isnt an actor I believe the tears that he often sheds during the reveals are genuine as well.

OK, somebody nominate me and one of my cars. I'd love to give him the chance to "make a mess" out of it.

I too enjoy Gas Monkey, I'd drink a beer with Richard any day (and he seems to like beer).
Fantomworks is good also, they do it right. Overhaulin is not bad, I enjoyed watching it for Courtney..... but yes the lok is somewhat similar, but thats his style, nothing wrong with that. I'm going to supercharge my Mustang and when the stock 5.0 gives way I am actually thinking about sedning it to a smaller shop for a 5.0 Coyote installation. Bill |

Old thread. I'm not an expert on older VW's but what part of that bus is a mess? The rims and tires might be a bit suspect (size) but for an untrained eye like mine their style appears stock.

Indeed, an old thread....old enough to see how these shows have developed.
I still like Gas Monkey......Ass Monkey. It is more more like your neighborhood hot rod shop than those other hi zoot lashups. I do admire Foose and the work thoes guys kick out.......but the show's forumla is worn out and the predictable, "Foose look"is also. The "hangers on"attached to the show as talking heads leave me cold. Hollywood unreal people....

I certainly admire some of the work that Foose does, but I admit that some of the uprades are way to "donk" for my taste...I surely wouldn't be that upset if they Overhauled my Carrera, though, as long as my insider had the right input.
I do miss AJ, though. The new girl, Arianny or whatever, seems like she's about as bright as a 20 watt bulb in the noonday sun. She can't even read the cue-cards at any more than what seems like a fourth-grade level. She's totally annoying.

This is an awesome pic. You put a cool car together for your father, and I bet you did not put stupid big wheels on it either.
Pretty sure I ate at that restaurant behind him when I went to Portland to pick up my Miata.

Haven't seen Overahaulin in years. Now that you guys have spilled the beans that AJ is gone, I'm less motivated to catch up.
Chatted up some of the cast and crew a while back at a Petersen Foose exhibit opening and the admiration for Chip is impressive. The folks who work with him both like and admire him. How often is that the backstory on a reality show? A while later I met Chip - really nice guy and seemingly unaffected by his fame.

There was one episode where the spouse was asked by Foose which example of his exterior themes she thought that her husband would like for the car - they were typically Foose wild. She was really trying to stay more conservative, close to what you might find on the dealer's showroom (which is how I'd want it). You could see that Foose was a little frustrated by the lack of input in his direction.
Chip replied: "You have seen the show before, haven't you?"
