Found a Black and Decker Workmate on the curb with a roached top, and a few days later a dining room table with a thick wood top was freepiled, so I combined the two and created a new 30" x 20" bench-top Workmate with a 5” leaf.

^^^Now that is pretty cool.

Thanks! This is the second one I've made. I'll try to find pix of the other one in progress..

This is the first Workmate hack I built:
I started with the scrap Workmate my neighbor offered me, a junk aluminum level for the side risers, a freepile IKEA butcher-block cart, a beautiful 1” thick hard masonite-and-formica top and some casters scabbed from an ANTHRO cart that was being discarded at work. The final product is sturdy and portable. I use it all the time in the garage. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1632260693.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1632260693.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1632260693.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1632260693.jpg (You can see the 5” leaf leaning against the leg in the shot below.) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1632260693.jpg |
^^^^Now that is pretty handy too!

Crazy I got a workmate in a scrap haul today and figured someone could use it so i put it out at the curb. Its out there now. I dont know what id use it for seems like it would just get in the way. What do you guys do with it woodworking stuff?
|
Mostly, yeah woodworking stuff.
|
I had 2 Workmates. One was something that I bought with the step and a top made of particle board. The other was old, and something that was my dad's. When we downsized, I got rid of both. I'm regretting getting rid of my dads. It was much sturdier than the one that I had. Maybe I remember incorrectly and I still have it, but I don't think so.
Your mods are very cool. |
I have 2 newer ones, they're crap compared to the old ones, but still not bad, I think it was a 2 for 1 sale on Amazon. I use one as a base for my sliding compound miter saw, it's *just slightly* too weak, but it works.
I also have a vintage one that would mount on TOP of an existing workbench, it has synthetic clamps with steel edges, and can tilt. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1632453766.jpg |
Back in the late 70's and early 80's I worked at an independent home center . We were an old school home center/hardware store and sold basically everything . We had Workmate models 100 , 200 and 400. The 400 was the heavy duty model and light blue in color . I still have and use one !!! The particle board top needs to be replaced but I have had a huge variety of projects on that over the years . It is heavy but very versatile .

I have my grandpas work mate that we got him for xmas in the early 80s. Its pretty heavy duty and I do use it occasionally. Mostly when i need more hands to wood etc. It was the perfect size when I upholstered the targa bar on my 911 as well.

I have 2 WM's, the cast AL framed one that everyone seems to covet, and another all steel model that I replaced the tops with steel for a welding table. It's handy and I can put it away.

Jumped on this today two hrs after posted on CL... I figured it'd be gone by the time I emailed.. Perfect timing is all, wasn't looking for these in particular, was just looking for a roller for my Craftsman box.. Guessing it's '40s vintage. Still has the original wrench accessory shelf and the locking strap.
The savings on the roller will probably be lost cause now I HAVE to find a matching top box for it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1632539659.jpg |
Local estate sale for $300 Rowe R89 juke box. Not sure yet if its a score. As with all old juke boxes it needs a little tlc. It plays records and sounds decent. Will be fun to have around.

It came with the records?

Mostly 70s and 80s. The current selections are exactly what you would imagine being in a juke box from 1985. Some decent stuff and some stuff that will be swapped out. There are some Sinatra records, bon jovi, quite a bit of early 80s country, Meatloaf, John Denver, Springstein. Its super easy to swap out records as long you have large hole 45rpm you are all set. There is a program you can get to make new labels.

Before he tells you, old Snap on round corner tool boxes of that nature are worth 200. It's worth 30 bucks to me.
