Google will be looking at your Thermostat now

Google aquires Nest

Glad I did not allow my electric company to put one in.

Google's reach expands into your home more via $3.2 billion Nest acquisition | ZDNet

Great. Now they'll send us ads for snuggies if we keep our house too cold...

Stupid...like the smart meter that ComEd has managed to convince some fools to believe will revolutionize electric power usage.

I have a Nest thermostat. They rock.
Google however, is taking over the world of data. They truly want to know everything about everything.

Maybe they'll add a camera and start offering a new mapping feature called "Bedroom View."

I like my wifi thermostat. It's not a nest, so it's not quite as sleek and cool looking, but the functionality is great. I can program it from my computer at the house. I could have it set up to be programmed from my phone/remotely, but I don't need to change the thermostat remotely, so I don't have it set up for that.

Steve, do you need to be able to program it from your Laptop? Mine programs right on the thermostat!

$3.2BN paid to acquire Nest. Wonder how long it will take before there is a $3.0BN writeoff. Since Google doesn't have any significant consumer electronics revenue, it will be hard to bamboozle the accounting rules on this.

Maybe they are looking to masquerade as a manufacturing company. One of the guys at GE used to say that GE was a bank masquerading as a manufacturing company. apparently the accounting rules were better if they were a manufacturing company.

Hahah, no, I can program it from the Thermostat. It's touch screen. I just hate programming thermostats from the thermostat. The interface for creating 7 day programs is pretty clunky. My program is rarely Mon-Fri and Sat-Sun or any of the usual settings.

I like this interface much more. Not only that, but it'll give you a csv of when your thermostat and fans run including the weather for your area, if you're interested in that sort of info. It also gives you how long the AC and/or heat has run so far today and how much it ran yesterday by hovering over the icon in the status bar.

Try this one - they have an iOS/Android app and you can control everything over WiFi.

I've had one in my old place and just bought one for the new house.

+1 for the NEST, it is a cool bit of kit. Great out of the box experience, easy to set up, and works like a charm. We routinely forget to set the temp back when we leave, this thing figured out that we were gone and did it for us! $249 is a bit rich, but it seems solid and well constructed.

I like the return on that startup - 3 years old and $3.2B exit. wow.

The contrast to the NEST was my in-law's Honeywell programmable t-stat. They asked "since you used to work for Honeywell, can you set this up for us?" LOL - uh, nope. No one can....that was the most ridiculous interface EVER!

.... just great.... the NSA and Giggle will know everything about the climate in my house

trolling.... maybe someday in an energy crisis, they'll take control over the supply lines and our thermostats.
