That has mercury in it, so you should immediately remove it and put it in garbage...
I have a web-thermostat in a vacation home. Venstar. Will pay for itself in less than a year, because I can turn off the A/C when people leave. Am tempted to put on in my house, so I can change temps with my phone from bed... ![]() Don't care about google, or anyone else knowing about my temperature habits. IMHO bigger issue would be hackers getting to Nest servers and turning up the temperature of the world. |

My wife was surprised when I emailed her from London telling her that she must have left the house A/C on one day last summer when she was at work.

Bigger question - you guys alter your household temperature that much? My wife is a stay at home mom so I don't even have that option, turning off the A/C in the summer would not go over well. But if I shut off or even turned down our A/C over the summer, it would take hours to catch up and make the temperature bearable again. Must be all you SoCal guys, where 85 is a hot summer day.

I continue to stop and look at these new Wifi Thermostats (fancy color Honeywell at Lowes and the Nest at HD) but frankly can't find a reason to part with that much money. Our old school programmable works great to the point we don't even touch it. If the prices ever drop to the $50 range the geek in me will probably relent.

85 maybe in Santa Monica in the Summer, Most of LA will get to 100+ in August/September. However where I live, it cools down to the low 70s almost every night during the Summer. Low 30s at night in the dead of Winter. Don't run much heat or A/C about six months of the year. My house is poorly insulated and has vaulted ceilings. I turn the HVAC off at night and when I go to work.

That little Harman wood pellet stove in the corner provides all the heat we can bear for our one level home. We do have a furnace but have yet to run it. AC is used for a couple of the really warm summer weeks and/or when we have a humidity spike from a tropical storm that comes up from the gulf. Otherwise our whole house fan does a great job. Similar temperature conditions as reported by Hugh.
So yeah another perk for living in a more temperate climate.
