Well, that was not a terrible movie. Not the sort of movie I usually watch but it was ok.

Ridley Scott shows a close up of Ash's profile for maybe a second before he opens the door. This dude is not human and Scott gave us a hint. It's a huge plot point later in the movie but on the front end he dropped a tiny clue in there. 45 years and one BlueRay later I pick up on it.

What are you seeing that says Ash is artificial?

Pasty, mottled complexion. Subjective of course. It differs from more distant shots which show an even color to his face.

Also, expressionless.

I didn't realize Ian died in 2020 at age 88. He was the perfect actor for that role. Lance Henriksen was good as the next artificial crew member, Bishop.

Was "Dragged through Concrete" discussed here? Couldn't find but watched this past weekend. A slow first half setting the scene, but then it get's pretty crazy to the end. same director as Brawl in Cell Block 99 and many same characters. Following the Tarantino way I guess.

Steve Carlton 12-20-2023 11:56 AM

I liked Dragged Across Concrete. I watch Mel Gibson whenever I see his movies. My favorite one is Payback.

Watched these yesterday, both similar premise.
Where old Navy does not accept PT boats (John Wayne) or Aircraft carriers (Gary Cooper).
As a Navy ATC veteran found both entertaining.

Finally watched Racing in the Rain, good flick to see with the wife.

This was one of the most influential movies of my youth & the ending is especially memorable. I guess crooks didn't prosper back in the 70s.

(A good break down of the movie but the guys voice/accent may put you off)

Lamb is super WTF. Based at a farm with a herd of sheep in Iceland, it's like a fairy tale. Moves slow, not much dialog, cute and sweet, sad and creepy with a bit of horror. Stars Noomi Rapace. Not a great movie unless you want to see something super strange. If you've got the time, watch it without seeing the trailer or reading about it. Or watch the trailer and see it a little spoiled. Either way is good.

Finally watched Joaquin Phoenix as Joker (Netflix).

$1+bn box office, $400M in profit. Well done, especially Phoenix.

Recommend.

Reptile on Netflix. A murder mystery with good actors and pretty good acting.

stevej37 01-05-2024 06:53 PM

Curry and Cyanide...a Netflix docu about a family in India and cyanide. :)

Found this gem by accident, and was thoroughly entertained: Arizona from 2018.

<iframe width="500" height="300" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gbL6QgwZ4N8" title="OFFICIAL TRAILER | Arizona (2019) Danny McBride, Rosemarie DeWitt | Screen Bites" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Cassie [Rosemarie DeWitt (Mad Men, Rachel Getting Married)] is a real estate agent and single mom struggling to keep it all together. Things go from bad to worse when a disgruntled client, Sonny (Danny McBride), confronts Cassie’s boss and accidentally kills him. Having witnessed the crime, Sonny kidnaps Cassie to keep her quiet until he figures out what to do. But he makes one outrageously bad – and bloody – decision after another, until things completely spiral out of control.

Small bit parts by Seth Rogan (Knocked Up), Luke Wilson (Idiocracy), Katlin Olson (Always Sunny), and David Allen Grier (In Living Color).

In a word, dark. Really dark yet fun. Danny McBride (The Righteous Gemstones) really plays it up, with all the violence and blood, he's more concerned about his golf game and back pain. It's this contrast that makes it entertaining. It's bloody, but in a dark humor kind of way. My kind of flick. 4/5.

Today around 5:30 TCM will show "Deathtrap". Quirky movie with Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve and Dyan Cannon directed by Sidney Lumet. Well worth a watch....
