Watching "Castaway" on FXM channel - almost over. Seen it a bunch of times. Saw it when it first came out in the theater and remember how blown away I was that night.

It's still one of the best movies in recent times on a number of levels.

Watching a 'new for me' movie now on FXM called "The Descendants" with George Clooney.

I saw the last hour of it earlier and because of FXM's encore format I'll now be able to see the first hour that I missed.

Anyway - it's a good movie (based on what I have seen so far - great ending especially).

Based in Hawaii with some beautiful soundtrack music.....and gorgeous scenery.

Well that's stretching the notion of 'old movies,' but your thread; your rules.

All the stuff Alexander Payne has done is worth watching. Like John Hughes, he makes 'shades of gray' films with adults. People in his films aren't 100% bad or good. They are like... people.

If you liked The Descendants, I think the best thing Clooney has been in in a long time was Up in the Air.

Thanks for the head's up on the other GC movie. I'll watch for it.

And the Alex Payne series.....

This is just the movie thread - not just old ones....maybe you're thinking of that other thread someone else started. Mine's the original and all encompassing one....kinda like this guy:

As I was.

Lebowski was mentioned before, but I think you need to see pretty much everything by the Coen bros.

I think the best of the rest are Raising Arizona, Blood Simple, O Brother Where Art Thou and The Man Who Wasn't There. Barton Fink is best understood by people who 'get' writer's block. And Hudsucker Proxy is for fans of 40s & 50s films. Everyone seems to like Fargo, but I think it's just okay for a Coen bros effort.

Oh, and I think you liked some of my offbeat suggestions before. I think Ghost World and Rushmore are pretty great if you're able to remember what life was like when you were in your teens.

Cate Blanchett has won the Oscar for best actress, for her role as a socialite unhinged by her husband's financial crimes in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine. "As random and subjective as this award is, it means a great deal in a year of, yet again, extraordinary performances by women," said the actress. Blanchett beat previous Oscar winners Sandra Bullock, Amy Adams, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep to win the coveted award.

EDIT: The video I embedded earlier has been removed to protect the copyright of the Academy Awards.

Here's one that's still up...

She's at hottie at 44...hey the Aussies did pretty good last night!

An excellent movie.

The roof scene when Clancy Brown almost threw Tim Robbins off the roof - then later they all had cold beers...that was a great part of the movie.

And another amazing performance by Morgan Freeman.

Awesome film.

The prequel, "If.." is great too.

Ellen Page is very watchable, (even though she bats for the other team) in Hard Candy and Whip It.

My wife rented "Prisoners" today. Hugh Jackman was excellent as the distraught father.

I could see my self doing similar things if one of my kids were taken.

Jake Gynthal's acting was ok but not fantastic but it may have been the character he was playing.

The ending was not what I was expecting.
