Automotive Idiot Detector

The photo below was taken at a stoplight on the way to work this morning. Not sure about your state, but here in Florida when you get your new registration sticker there are explicit instructions to apply the sticker in the upper right hand corner, on top of an existing sticker (if there is one). I just recently started snapping pictures (always while at rest ) of all the various techniques people use to NOT apply their stickers in the correct location. I see literally dozens of them every day. I rank this at about a 4 on the idiot scale.

My feeling is that if you cannot read directions and apply a sticker properly, your driving skills are already suspect. 9 times out of 10 they prove me correct.

At least the kid is an honor student, because at least one of the parents appears to be an idiot.

I scatter mine around as an act of civil disobedience.

But, then, I am an id10t - or rather *the* id10t of the board

I find that really good grades = incompetent. I find that really poor grades = incompetent.

We have a messed up education system.

That said - I do not understand why anyone puts stickers on their rear bumper - that is what they see you when you don't realize the exit ramps are both accessed from the far right lane - and you are in the far left and suddenly need to cut in, etc.

They just do not do your cause any good. The rear bumper is what most people see right after you've done something to tick them off. (If they rear end you - you don't see their front bumper long enough to read it in most cases as it happens so fast)

I personally think its better to stick them on the front fenders or front bumper.

That said, I've never seen missplaced stickers around here. A few days ago a policewoman was in a RUCKEUS about an upside down dealer tag in a parking lot. She wouldn't say whose it was, but just sat and waited for a long time to maul the driver.

LOL - Why not just rename that image as Florida license 583ISK idiot and re-post? Let google do its funny magic.

Anyhow, reminds me of years ago seeing a new Corvette that had a temp. registration paper taped in the corner of the windshield. Normal at the time but, it also sported a WALL DRUG bumper sticker where the license plate would go! Weirdo's

Just so I get this straight, the Automotive Idiot Detector is the Florida plate, correct?

Correct.

You come up behind one of these people in traffic, you see the randomly applied stickers all over the license plate, and then you wait for the idiot driving maneuver...

It looks like they did apply the sticker in the upper right hand corner of the plate.

Seriously, you jumped to the conclusion that this person has owned this vehicle a long time... it could be that they just bought it.

Funny stuff, though. Lots of funny stuff in Florida... some friends near Orlando educated me on "Q-Tips."

I travel the state every day and see these stickers in the wrong place all the time. My family and I call a five-sticker screw-up a "home-run" when we see them and they are pretty rare. Congratulations.

I can tell you the most of the drivers do have something in common. Their race.

The instructions in my state ask that you remove the old one first.

I had my Geo Tracker for nearly 20 years, every five years or so I would try to take off as many as I could.

You will not get a ticket for putting it on wrong, it's an act of civil disobedience in my opinion.

This is a picture I took in Savannah GA at Porsche Parade. This guy drives his old long hood to Parade and has for many years. He has 40 years of stickers on the tag.

I don't think this guy is an idiot. He just keeps the same car forever, which is cool.

I suppose some people are protesting something in their own mind, like authority or perhaps even following written instructions - you know the rebel types.

For me I didn't like the fact that I was forced to change plates (state law - affected everyone). Compounded by the fact that I didn't read instructions and put it in the wrong corner the first time. This lead to a long tradition. I never got called on it until the day the car died and a cop car pushed it off to the side of the road and noticed - a little too late by then.

I mean it was on the wrong side for 18 of the 20 years, like it matters.

Ha! I like that! I'm going to use it.

Here is this morning's contribution. This is the standard "7-10 Split" and is the most common sighting. Usually they will ping pong back and forth so that the previous year's sticker is always visible. Sometimes the temptation to place them on all four corners becomes so great that you end up with the "Quad Spread". When all four corners become filled, the confusion sets in and then the real fun begins. That's when you end up with the variations such as the aforementioned "Home Run".

Putting sticker on top of sticker on top of sticker is a no no.
It makes it real easy for low-lifes to peel off your current sticker and glue it on their beater.
I hate getting pulled over for non-current tags when they really are current.

In fact lots of folks I know take a razor knife and cut slits in the new sticker just to make it un-possible to peel off in one piece.

Our new KS stickers have the tag number on them. Pretty tough to use them on another tag.
