We just need to have laws against stabbing people. That will stop it.

We need a government service message 'STOP KILLING PEOPLE'. Should budget $10b for billboards, TV spots, banners, special signage for all schools, churches, saloons. Oh why quit there... everyone is required to post a sign on their front door?!.

In all seriousness, the city of Rockford, IL had signs like the above made and posted on telephone poles. Nut effen' crazies.

No wait, better yet everyone by law is required to have 'STOP KILLING PEOPLE' BUMPER STICKERS! Really big azz, day-glo colored type.

Lighten up francis and unbunch your PC self.

The jokes in this thread is a reponse to all the ijuts out there who have taken every single tragedy over the past decade and screamed "we need to outlaw guns, won't anyone think of the children?"

It's a sore subject and it's about time it get's thrown back in their faces to show how ridiculous they sound. Plus people sometimes just need to vent.

who is more dangerous?

2 men of equal stature are 15 feet from you, one has a gun one has a knife. who is more of a threat?

http://www.bladecombat.com/knifemyths.html

Quote:
Myth: You can pull a gun and shoot a knife attacker before he can kill you if he's at least 20 feet away.
Fact: If the knife combatant is wearing a vest and already has the knife quietly drawn, he can kill 95% of even the top gun combat experts. Reason: in closing the distance, halfway there, your option to shoot to the head is gone or diminished. If you got even briefly stuck in clothing in your draw, had to chamber or take a safety off, had to set a trigger (eg. either mentally, or on a revolver), you'll be dead. If you got a shot to his vest and he took your throat out, you lose. If you are a police officer and not trained in immediate head shots, you die. If your shot does not immediately sever his spine or motor cortex (very unlikely in a fast draw/shoot situation), he is VERY LIKELY NOT to miss your eyes or throat, as a knife is FAR more accurate and certain, in it's range, than a gun. The more highly trained you are with a gun the more danger you're in. First: Mozambique will waste two shots center mass and you'll be dead before you can get to the head shot. Second: "Highly trained" means you're constantly worried about the legal ramifications of shooting someone who is unarmed. If the knife thug screamed "I'm unarmed" and charged you, your external carotid, subclavian, throat or eyes will be severed by the time you decide you can shoot. Worst of all: a gun might tempt you to stand your ground, when the safest option was to get the hell out of there!

I'm sure Angela didn't intend for her post to start another gun debate. No need to get into it again. There are simply too many deranged people walking around loose these days. Having some method of culling these people out of the mainstream before they become trouble would help reduce the frequency of events like this. I can imagine the lawyers & politicians having a field day with that one though.

one of the few bright spots is the attacker is still alive. I guess it's harder to kill yourself with a knife. My hope is both police and doctors will be able to learn more about what sets people off on these sprees when working with this kid.

Supposedly I have a bit of an unpopular outlook here according to some people... but I saw this thread and then looked at a news article about it and my reaction is... no reaction.

There are 7 billion people on this planet. Every day, there are going to be a few of those 7 billion things that do something like this. It happens. People get all upset on the news like this is something new (it's not) and wonder questions aloud like how could this happen (statistically, it is going to) and my oh my what should we do to stop it (nothing).

This is life. People are complex things. Some of them lose it. It sucks when they do. There is no short term fix that makes it better for everyone.

Like a modern computer processor, if you build enough of them, one out of ever million or so isn't going to work right when you turn it on one day.

And man I hate the CNN headlines. People died? bust out the 126pt font! Normal, happy news happened? Eh, 18 Pt. font.

Indeed... I was working and one of my clients sent the link across to me. My condolences to anyone whose child was hurt in this attack. We have a lot of Pelicans in the NE, and likely at least some in the area of this event. I'm quite embarrassed over the turn the thread took and if anyone whose child was hurt is reading this, please accept my apology, I had no idea this would take such a turn...

I have a couple of LEO friends and they've told me in the past they'd prefer close encounters with someone with a gun over a knife. Why? because juries and police civilian oversight boards think a knife isn't as dangerous as a gun, and justified shootings involving a gun are a much easier call on justified shootings.

No matter how you slice it, the answer is clearly to pass more laws. We need more laws. Won't someone think of the poor lawyers?

First off, condolences to the families touched by this senseless act. I cannot imagine what they must be going through.

That said, the entirely too predictable reaction from the clueless hand-wringing ninnies on the left has finally reached the point of self parody. Clearer thinking folks simply roll their eyes and sigh "here we go again...". The brain trust touting ever more law for every conceivable situation, earnestly believing that simply passing more law will somehow make us all safe, never misses an opportunity like this to spout off in their holier than thou "I told you so...", self righteous wail. Gimme a break...

There is simply no law, no collection of laws, that would could ever pass (and then be forced to live with) that could render us truly "safe" enough in their world. Madmen will continue to pop up, just as pointed out above - with billions and billions of us inhabiting this planet, there are going to be some aberations. Laws mean nothing to people who have gone over the edge, who have abandoned all civility to others. The soft headed snivelling twits demanding ever more restrictions on the rest of us in some ill conceived effort to reign these people in will never come to grips with that.

The only solution that is realistic is the same solution that has served manking from time immemorial - we are, each and every one of us, responsible for our own safety. That's a tough pill to swallow for far too many today, for the legions who have abandoned every vestige of personal responsibility. They long for someone else, anyone else, someone in "authority", to assume responsibility for them, for everything. Especially in the arena of personal safety and protection. It frightens them beyond words to even think about assuming such a responsibility for themselves. They find those of us who would be so bold as to assume such for ourselves somehow repugnent, old fashioned, and even a bit frightening. They would like nothing more to strip us of those rights, so we would be forced to cower as they do. And, as we all know, they can barely mask their glee at yet another opportunity to spout off about all of that. They could care less about these kids and their families. All they care about is their own agenda. It's high time the rest of us give them the attention they deserve - none - and go about providing for the real safety of ourselves and our children.

Maybe if there ahd been a few armed teachers...

Heard the kid had been aggressively bullied by some older kids. No excuses but if true, it's hard to imagine how a badgered child might react.

I would suspect that social media plays a big part in making many a child feel like all is lost when ostracized.

The meds thing is interesting, and scary. a 'friend' of one of my kids was recently started on meds. the kid has generally changed quite a bit. less anti-social and generally less of a dick. but reading about the med this kid is on brings to light that there can be severe violent reactions to stopping the dosage.

I understand the parents motivation and find it hard to say they did the wrong thing in choosing to medicate their child. Who knows the situation for the kid in this story.

Excellent, excellent post. All the laws in the world can't protect you. Banning guns can't protect you. Banning knives can't protect you. Regardless of what you want to believe, you are responsible for your own safety and the safety of your loved ones. You can either take this to heart or bury your head in the sand. Sadly not much could have been done to prevent this tragedy, and my prayers are with those impacted. Sometimes $h!t happens, and it sucks when it happens to kids.

You have to wonder how much modern society, single parent homes, dual income households, and extensive medication of kids plays into this. I was a fat kid that didn't play sports, I was bullied through high school. "Snapping" for me was putting one of my roommate's head through a wall after he dumped beer on a girl friend. I didn't blame others, or society, for what I went though. But I had a solid home life with two parents, my mom stayed home with us as young kids, good solid extended family relationship, etc. It seems that kids today are more stressed than ever before - overmedicated, dysfunctional home life, high divorce rate, little time or interaction with parents, lack of physical activity, etc. 50 years ago most households had guns, many displayed prominently in a wood and glass case - yet there were no mass shootings. So what changed in our society to spur this behavior?

Only in Kalifornia...

Any handgun has to pass a "drop test" in CA or it's automatically illegal. Another de facto ban under the guise of "reasonable restriction" from the loony liberal left.
