I tried that and the appraiser said I'd be lucky if State Farm didn't come after me for appreciation, as I got an entire new exhaust system on a 60k mile BMW E46. Repairs were $7k. And that accident never showed on Carfax. But when that pedestrian claimed I hit her and my insurance paid for her abulance ride, that did show on Carfax. The guy who later bought the car asked me about that and didn't believe me.

I love the car. As in love. Only downside is that at 7K miles I had an adaptive headlight error and they replaced the unit. Then at 10K miles I got the same error - they replaced the controller (which is probably what was bad in the first place). It may end with more gremlins but who knows.

From a functional standpoint I can't find anything wrong with it. It carries all my stuff. It has taken 4 of us camping (with all our gear). It is fast enough and handles well enough to be entertaining to drive, yet behaved enough to be comfortable in day-to-day use. I have the 2L turbo with 8-speed auto and paddle shifters (but it is an auto, not a SMG). Smooth and quick. Get around 23mpg city, over 30mpg highway.

In fact so smooth that part of why I'm now bummed is that post-accident I have vibration in the drivetrain that wasn't there before. I know the exhaust has been bent but not sure how far forward that goes. I'm worried that it may have tweaked the rear drivetrain components as well. Either way I'm going to make a big stink about that as the car drove like glass and now it doesn't. That needs to get fixed and if it doesn't then lawyers will have to get involved. The car has 11K miles on it so it was and should be perfect.

I could easily see this being $10K+ in damage if the exhaust/drivetrain is involved. We'll see how it goes. If they totaled it I'd order another X1 with the exact same config - nothing I'd change on the vehicle.

Yeah, that went through my mind. I've been rehabbing my back the past two months, swimming every day. I still can't really ride either bicycle or motorcycle - my discs don't like it. Events like this morning and the same thing happening a year ago make me think about letting the GS go. I love riding, but it seems like every other driver is distracted. Takes the joy out of it.

Next the battle will be about the drivetrain vibration. I can feel it but it is subtle. I'm hoping I don't have to fight that and I already told the agent that it will need to be addressed and that I won't settle for anything other than perfection. He said, "we'll do the best job we can" to which I replied "that isn't good enough - it needs to be the same as it was before your insured hit it."

Drop it off tomorrow AM at the shop and pick up the rental. Off to the pool later then ice on the back.

Dang Todd...that's tough. I know I don't need to tell YOU this, but keep rubbing your neck while they fix your ride back to perfection (plus diminished value). Those costs are trivial to the ins. company compared to what they fear from medical payouts....leverage

You know you will regret letting it go. You did last time.

I don't know where this is going to end for us (motorcyclists). Things have certainly changed, and rather dramatically, for the worse. I cannot imagine life without a motorcycle (or four...), but the risks are increasing to the point that I think a lot of us are having similar thoughts.

When my E46 was hit, I was boxed in at a light and saw it coming in my mirror. I ever saw the German driver (au pair) mouth, "Ach scheisse!" She hit me so hard, the change in my center console almost broke the windshield. But there was barely a scratch on the bumper. I took the trunk lid off the car in front of me. But my car didn't sound right after that. Turned out she had tweaked the exhaust and it no longer sealed up on the manifold. I was sure it was drivetrain damage, but it was not and drove and sounded perfect after the repair.

That's my hope. The muffler is tweaked downward and half the hanger is dangling. It likely got shoved towards the front and is either just rattling or bent somewhere. Cautiously optimistic but vibrations like that drive me nuts.

Man, you have a lot of accidents! FWIW, your car will never be the same as it was before the collision. But I understand the concept. It's only a car, and a completely replaceable one, so I wouldn't sweat it. I've found a really good body shop that I have been sending people to lately near the Grove on 3rd St., they are filled with new BMWs. Let me know if you want their info.

Not sure about a lot - coyote in '06, CRV in '13, X1 in '14, last two rear-ended. I dropped the car off at Caliber in Santa Monica that does a lot of higher end cars and is one of State Farm's "preferred" places. Last time I had them cut a check and I took it to another small shop that I like but in this case I want them to be on the hook for whatever turns up. The guy who received the car said, "looks like he hit you hard". When I mentioned the vibration he knew exactly what I was talking about and said it likely was exhaust but they've also seen differentials get damaged on rear end impact. At least they didn't look at me with a blank stare...

Driving a Taurus Limited or something. Hopefully I won't get rear ended in that though it is a freakin' tank...

Jeeze, twice for me in the past 4-1/2 months.

With the Boxster it was very hard to see. Less so with the Volt.

Thing is, cars with bumper covers conceal damage.
