I think they were ahead of their time back in the day, I liked their work and still listen to their music sometimes. I heard a rumor a while back that they might be getting back together.
Remember that crazy video for peek-a-boo !! |

Saw them in Sydney ,Australia round about 1980. Loved the cover of The Stones 'Satisfaction', 'Girl U Want', 'Uncontrollable Urge' and of course 'Whip It'. They were able to generate a palpable energy both on stage and on vinyl! I'm not sure but in Australia in the 70's there was this kids show called 'Bill and Ben the Flower pot Men'-they were string puppets that wore exactly the same hats as they did on stage-

I met the Mothersbaugh's a few years ago at a NAMM show and they were both very friendly and gracious guys...

As a 13 year old, this was rock and roll. My older brothers were led zepplin, montrose and my older sister was rockin out to Bread. Devo was different, wild, fresh, unpredictable. I nearly wore the groves out on first albums, playing them over and over while building slot car tracks.
They were the first concert I went to. My mom gave me a couple of candy bars to take with me so that during the show I could have a snack. I went with a friend and his older brothers. Holy smokes on the way to the show they pulled out a pipe and started getting high. I had never seen pot before then and had no interest, however when the older dudes found out that I had the candy bars I gained instant status. The show was wild and was canceled half way thru by fire marshalls due to overcrowding. A small riot ensued following the bringing up of the lights. It was a fantastic nite of youthful exhuberance. I still have alot of thier songs on my Ipod and they never get skipped.

They put electromusic into the mix. As influencial as The Police and the Ramones were on the new wave movement in the early 80's. Adam and the Ants (Later Adam Ant), Men at Work and the B-52s followed suit. All had more than a trick pony. All had fun albums and none seem to take themselves too seriously.

They're still very active and everyone on the board still hears them almost every day, whether you realize it or not. They're one of the most popular writers and performers of high-end advertising music today.
How they got into advertising songwriting is intetresting. They decided several years ago that the modern model of artists getting paid for copies of their songs had become obsolete. They noted that until modern times, musicians made their money either by live performance (pay per view) or they gained a rich sponsor who commissioned them to write and perform for them. They realized that the modern equivelent is to take on corporate gigs. If you have enough money, you can commission DEVO to write and perform a song for you, your kid's birthday, or your brand's new product. The quality of the song will be the same as any of their regular compositions they did on spec, as it were. They're making more money than ever. Some of their commercials could be hit songs if released the regular way. I think they're brilliant.
