Fox TV and Dish Network dispute
I'm sure SOME of you know that Dish is not presently showing Fox News, along with a few of the other channels.
The dispute is contractual. They agree on what Dish will pay for the main network programming. But some side smaller channels, Fox would like to triple the price. The Result: Fox News Ratings Plummet As Consequence Of Dish Network Blackout And it looks like the rating drop is out of proportion to the percentage of households that have Dish. In other words, Dish people are more likely to watch Fox. This has not affected me, since we pay for Comcast-Xfinity elsewhere and can use their online service to watch. The funny part: No commercials! So, double loss!

Dish people are more likely to watch Fox
That's an interesting tidbit right there.

We are Dish customers because it is the lowest cost of any service (if you can't get signal with an antenna) and we don't watch the news... any broadcast news... or should I say infotainment?

The local CBS network is scrolling a crawl along the bottom of the screen about Dish network. They will pull their broadcast from Dish network on the 15th. Local Dish subscribers will not be able to see any of the shows including the upcoming national college football championship game. I am not on Dish so I don't care but there will be some pissed customers.

I have DISH for my RV, I'm getting tired of their schit. Fee for this, fee for that, fee to not have it for a few months. I like Fox news, now they've cut it off. I may well dump it.

We have had dish for many years and for the most part have been pleased. My wife is from Spain and dish carries TVE1 Madrid and this is what really keeps us in the dish fold. Since this latest dust up with Fox plus some local channels we are looking for some alternative method to receive tv from Spain. When we do dish is toast. This hick hayseed watches Fox news.

I have to say that I have not watched more than a few hours of TV news per year for the past decade or more, and what I do watch is CNN during breaking stories (air disasters, etc). The signal to noise ratio is abysmal. You sit there and lose an hour of your life, for maybe 5 seconds of actual and non-repetitious data. The rest is opinions, commentary, rants, commercials, fluff stories, and other garbage. 10 minutes scanning the Google news aggregator and clicking through to stories of interest gets you more information than an entire day staring at TV news. I honestly don't know why you guys bother to watch FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN etc news. As far as I can tell, the people who watch the most TV news are also the least informed people around.

The majority of cable costs are for sports, and movies.
I read somewhere that one of GE's biggest moneymakers was from porn in hotels. Go figure. There's an infographic out there on the web with a breakdown of channels, and what the Point Of Sale companies(Dish etc) have to pay to offer them. Every subscriber subsidizes the few expensive channels. Many people want to pay only for individual channels, and have it all broken up. |

Seems the cable carriers have come to the grim realization that they have maxed out the price point with respect to what consumers are willing to pay and still consider the service a value.
More and more people no longer have a landline and have gone 100% cellular. The only reason I still have one is it does not cost me more than a few pennies a month. Streaming has disrupted their PPV and on-demand businesses and it's only going to get worse, that ship has sailed. People have figured out that OTA and streaming can provide them with most of the content they actually consume and the other 200 channels in their package are just not worth it. They can get their preferred content for a yearly cost, including one time hardware purchase, that is comparable to or often even less than their monthly cable bill. So they are left with providing access. This past year we have seen the speed war start. They are offering more bandwidth for the same or a slightly higher price. We are seeing partnerships to provide some of the streaming services through their set tops and technology that allows for mobile viewing using their set top as the hub. It's no coincidence why the players are aligned on one particular side of the net neutrality issue.

Until cable/satellite services figure out a la carte pricing, this ***** will continue. I no longer subscribe to any service, as I got loaded up with sports, religious and furrin language channels that I have zero interest in. I would subscribe to a movies-only service with TCM, AMC, IFC if such a thing were offered. I suspect others would subscribe to select sports only...
I have Apple TV and Roku, and an overload of 'smart' devices. Generally I can find something to watch. I also have free over-the-air digital access to about 14 stations... but I don't spend anywhere near enough time in front of the TV for it to make a difference. If I could only make those awful Dish TV spots stop...
