I don't have one now, but I'm pissed off to get one.

I don't have a gun of any type. I've been seeing a lot of drive-by, store hold up types, by many of the types I would like to see 6 feet under. Where do I start? I know, a gun store guidence, et al. What type of gun would anyone suggest to get for a small carry type. I have no mercy for anyone who comes up on me, or anyone who commits any kind of crime in front of me. DON'T piss me off. Any thoughts on this.

So what happened?

Don't go looking to be a vigilante. DEFINITELY don't go looking to be a vigilante and post about it on a public BBS...

That said there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Beretta, Colt, Sig, Glock, S&W, Kimber, Springfield and many others make fine products. Budget? Size? Caliber choice?

Go to a gun range, rent a few different types and calibres. Get an idea what you like.

I do not think they teach what is most needed at a gun range.
With the absence of the draft we have a generation of men with zero for concepts except for video games.
I hardly think they count.
For instance the mental commitment.
The laws of protection in "your" state.
The mental calisthenics involved is probably more important then reaching for you chosen hot lead squirter .
In the advent of the "emergency" most people will not do the "right" thing.

Strup, I can hear your frustration. It's good to hear no one has been injured.
I own several weapons and have my CCW.

I'd recommend taking a training/demonstration course.
Rent several different calibers and rank them.
You'll know when to purchase.

Let's get you up to speed properly and safely by learning from someone you feel comfortable with.

Good luck!

Best,
Don

All these gun threads... I guess America really is a thug culture.

And I'm a conservative.

As Jurgen's experience illustrated, if you think you need to buy a gun and start carrying, its time to move.

Seriously. There is still A LOT of America out there where you can be unarmed and your family will be safe. Move.

My thoughts as well. I own some gats but I feel no need to carry them outside of my domicile. Not judging someone who does feel the need, (these threads demonstrate that there are some dangerous cities or areas in the U.S.), but I've never been in a situation where having a gun would have been beneficial. Maybe a few where it made me feel safe, like camping or traveling, but never needed.

When I get old and can be easily beaten down, I might consider carrying depending on how dangerous life is then. Random street crime is extremely rare in Los Angeles, I talk to a lot of people and read the LA Times everyday.

Talk to your lawyer first. And become an expert on self defense laws before you do anything - self defense is an excellent licence to misbehave but you need to understand the rules first

1). Don't become an economic victim. Be aware. Avoid. Discourage at all cost.
2). Don't be an easy victim when the time comes.

In fairness every time I see some jackhole, sideways-hat and baggy pants wearing, tatted-up, pierced douche I'm glad I'm either carrying CCW or have ready access to my "little friend". It's only a matter of time before one of these douchenozzles tries something and it'll be nice to know that I ultimately hold the final word and authority on the resolution of the situation. I definitely don't go looking for trouble and I definitely don't want to have to draw down on someone but if things escalate the wrong way it is very comforting knowing it's likely that I'm ultimately going to walk away okay.

Yes, America does have a "thug culture". We've been glorifying gang members and ghetto trash since about the 1980s - certainly since the 1990s. ()rap music promotes it, etc. It's a lot worse in urban areas but the rural ones aren't immune, sadly. Too many douchebag punk whiggers out there looking for excuses to prove how tough they are to their dropout, go-nowhere-in-life buddies.

Having a CCW means a lot fewer things to worry about (but there are a few new ones too, so take training and be smart about it).

Thank goodness I've never had to draw on another human being and I truly hope I don't ever have to - much less actually shoot anyone to protect myself or those I care about. I don't ever want to but I'm awfully glad I at least have the option if the situation ever arises and goes pear-shaped.

Be careful. Do your homework, take classes, train up, be smart. Stay cool and don't look for trouble. Good luck!

And be AWARE! Awareness and avoidance of situations is the best defense.

There comes great responsibility with firearm ownership. A gun does not make you judge, jury, and executioner.

Here are two scenarios:

1. You have a CCW and your firearm with you, and are making your Slurpee at the local gas station convenience store. A thug comes in, points a gun at the cashier and demands money. The cashier opens the drawer... what do you do next?

2. You are in a restaurant with your family and you have a CCW and your firearm with you. A guy comes in with an AR-15 and starts shooting up the place. He starts going table by table putting bullets into everyone with no rhyme or reason. What do you do next?

Two very different situations - two very different ways to deal with it. In the first situation, the robber just wants the cash and get out of there. Drawing your gun can lead to an escalation of the situation more than anything. That is something you don't want to do. In the second situation, it is more clear that the perp is ready and willing to do harm and kill. At that point, drawing a gun may be your only line of defense and a means of diffusing the situation.

The two scenarios I outline above are easily distinguishable - but in real life, the lines between those types of situations are blurred. Having a firearm will not help you make the right choice - but it does give you more options...

-Z-man.
