What's the overall condition of your engine and your 911? Is there something specific that's driving your anxiety about catastrophic failure?

I try to drive the 70 regularly. I've had it since new and I still have it because it is fun to zip around in. I enjoy it. I worry more about being hit by some dimwit on a cell phone texting than blowing something up. And since it won't be for sale until I can't physically get in it I don't worry about the value. Just drive the car. They're fun. If you won't drive it sell it to someone who will.

Whats the point of having it? I've never understood having a car and not driving it because your afraid something could happen to it. It's a car drive it, enjoy it, fix it, love it.

Take the advice of the experts here on PPOT and trade it for a Boxster or a Chevy Cruze.

Because those are faster, more reliable, more economical, and more comfortable than your '69 T.

Well equipped minivans and SUVs are worth more than many 911s even with recent price escalation.

A broken sensor or electronic gizmo in newer vehicles out of warranty can cost many hundreds or even thousands.

An early 911 is a simple budget vehicle. Forget what you could sell it for and look and how poor you new car options are instead

My SC has apparently gone up in value since I bought it 14 years ago. yay.

I drive it often and have had a deer hit it, a woman rearended my wife was driving it, and it has some more rock chips now. I enjoy driving it as much as when I first got it. If I had to park it because it was worth big$$$ I would get rid of it.

that is why I sold mine. If I broke it, I could not afford to fix it.. still miss it though and will never be able to afford another one..

This is the dilemma with my 76 930...

Fortunately I have a hot rod 86 930 that I can still drive.

It's just a car. Use agreed value insurance just in case it gets totaled by a moron, and enjoy it.

this is why I sold my 76' 911S. I was able to get $50k for it in the shape it was. But any door dings or other damage, or more miles would have killed the value. So I cashed in and have not looked back. Would still like to get another air cooled 911, but the prices are keeping me away.

This is exactly how I feel about my 911. Between perpetually sucky weather, crap on the roads, idiot drivers with their snouts stuck in their smartphones and potholes that can (and do) shatter suspensions I don't drive mine much - but sunny days out on an open highway are a real treat!

Get it appraised, get agreed value insurance and drive it. I turned 157,000 on my Carrera this weekend. I was chatting with a guy that has a 2013 Boxster and he was afraid to drive it much because it might get a rock chip or have a wreck. If it is not totaled it can be fixed. If it is totaled, you can still buy another one. It is allowed. He wanted to look at my 30 year old car and he was amazed how clean and shiny it was. It is not a show car but I am proud of it.

I watched an episode of Chasing Classic cars this weekend. Wayne bought a car that was a 1954 with 7,000 miles. The former owner only drove it a few miles per year and kept it in a garage. The man is dead and he passed on a car to someone else to enjoy. I don't understand the point of owning a car and not driving it.

my fallback is an 85 street-legal track car.
as far as fix and repair, it's only 'original' once.

I have well north of a half million miles on the 911s and 356. In fact, probably closer to a million miles combined. I don't understand the mentality of not driving it. I do understand taking care of it, and cost of maintenance, etc. These are not cheap cars when it is time to replace or perform proper major maintenance. Routine maintenance, fine. Driving when the weather is good, absolutely. So I am biased in my reply, which is to quit worrying and drive it.
