How many guns is enough?

How many guns is enough?

I only have four, so my experience is limited. But his guy had over a thousand!

Mystery of dead man and his 1,200 guns deepens - LA Times

The mystery surrounding a dead man and his arsenal of firearms deepened Tuesday as officers continued removing roughly two tons of ammunition and expensive gun equipment from a Pacific Palisades home.

By noon Tuesday, investigators finished clearing out the last of the ammunition from his garage on Palisades Drive. Coroner’s investigators said the man has not been identified.

Wooden planks where officers organized thousands of dollars' worth of guns were empty, but piles of cardboard boxes filled with expensive rifle scopes worth $3,000 to $4,000 each and books on hunting, guns and shooting remained stacked in the packed garage.

The scene Tuesday was far different from what police discovered less than 24 hours ago.

Los Angeles police went to the man’s home Monday after finding his decomposing body in a car parked down the street from the home.

Inside the home, investigators found more than 1,200 firearms ranging from high-end pistols to shotguns and rifles. Many had never been fired. Some were still wrapped in their boxes, with the price tags still attached.

Along with the firearms, police discovered the mass storage of ammunition.

"Our truck couldn't carry it all," LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. "We had to go back and make another trip."

Police have determined there were no signs of foul play and are not investigating his death as a homicide, but are continuing to look into whether he legally owned the firearms.

Officers on Tuesday said there was no indication the man was a survivalist, but said his town house was so cluttered, it was impossible to walk inside without stepping on things.

"I heard they had to make a tunnel to get stuff out of the garage," said Sgt. David Craig of the LAPD's gang and narcotics division.

Investigators seized the ammunition and will run background checks on the firearms to determine whether they were used in any crimes.

"We don't think the weapons are illegal; we are taking them for public safety," Craig said, adding that it was a preemptive step to ensure the ammunition or guns wouldn't be stolen from the home.

A neighbor, who declined to identify herself, said she noticed the man’s car was parked in an alley for more than a day. It drew her attention, she said, because residents usually didn’t park their cars there.

Some people collect stamps.

What do you bet it doesn't make the news when they find nothing illegal.

I also bet his heirs won't get them back from LAPD without a fight.

He must have been a collector. Guns stored properly do not go down in value. That many guns are worth a lot. I hope the heirs get them all back and the ammo. They can sell them for some real coin.

Why the hell are cops allowed to confiscate lawful personal property without a warrant? Someone needs to file a huge lawsuit.

It is strange that they clean out the guy's home in a very safe neighborhood, just because nobody is home. It isn't that the guns were laying in the yard, ready to be picked up. I hope a relative rips them a new one.

Of course people collect and hoard stuff. Amongst things they hoard, there may be guns! I have more respect for a hoarding gun nut than the crazy cat lady.

Hmmmm....I dunno. I'm going to make myself unpopular, but frankly, I can see the cops point. I don't think leaving 1200 guns and 2 tons of ammo in a home unattended is a good idea. It doesn't sound like they were in safes. His heirs should have every right to the guns, but I don't think leaving them in the house until it's established who the proper owner should be is a good idea.

HD, while that sounds reasonable, unless it happens in California or New Jersey.

I don't believe for a second that the rightful owners of those guns will ever see them again.

1200 firearms were discovered by police in a dead man's home. the 800 guns were removed by police and taken to a secure location.. the 600 guns found by police in a dead man home were cataloged and serial numbers recorded. police found no ammunition in the home where 400 guns were discovered in a dead man's home

Any upper middle class lady can get this done on clothing and shoes. Both in numbers and expenses. Except that she will toss them out to Goodwill every year. You don't do that with guns ...

I bet this guy wasn't married, so his clothing family budget was probably pretty low.

If any of the guns are left for the heirs, they'll be happy he didn't collect shoes. Most if not all of these guns, if properly stored, will have appreciated in value significantly since they were bought.
