Banged up the plane
Dang it , I got some hangar rash from pushing the plane back into the hangar by myself. I did this a couple of weeks ago just before we were planing on visiting the kids. So it ment a 2500 mile round trip car ride. I'm not doing that again.
![]() I bought this afterword to hopefully keep it from happening again. ![]() The ding is going to cost me a month of downtime, and probably is a $5000 plus repair. Here it sits waiting for a new elevator. ![]()

Sorry to hear. Better than landing with the wheels up. I know someone who "touched the props" on a turbo jet. Was able to gun it, get the wheels down and land. $80,000 repair 30 years ago. Good luck.

What is it.. a 182? Unless it's a pristine show-bird, patch it and fly it!! Or if you don't like patches, then get it repaired at a reputable shop. I've sent stuff to this guy in the past and his work is excellent: R.J. Dauhn Aircraft LLC. A lot of people also like this vendor: Wing Core and Control Surface Repair | Airframe Components by Williams, Inc. And here is another one with a good reputation: Beegles Aircraft Services

Over 1/3 of all aviation accident happen on the ground...aboard ship the rate is even higher. I did a tour as the Airboss on a ship and moving aircraft was always special
![]() I'm with Cash on this. Looks easily repairable.

Ouch! Easy to do this. We always paint alignment stripes on the ground so when the wheels line up its a sure thing. I agree that control surface is repairable.

I'm curious, how were you moving it before you got the little motorized caddy thing? By hand?

You shoulda texted Philly. I'm sure he would have loaned you his personal 747, or at least one of the Lears. Think green.
Seriously, nasty ding.

I'm getting the elevator from these guys Biggs Aircraft - Home . I filed a claim with my insurance agent and she said as long as the repair was under 10K my premiums should not go up. I have a $50 deductible so no big deal except being grounded.

I talked with the guy at rjdauhn , but the shop here had work done at Biggs before and they were recommended elsewhere also. And the adjuster said they were a little higher, but they would pay for it.

The circled lip is what causes hangar rash.
![]() In order to get the airplane over this hump without a powered towbar, you have to develop momentum, push the airplane with the towbar in the nose gear for a few feet until it attains enough speed to jump the lip. The trouble is, doing this yourself, it's hard to spot the wingtips or elevator. Even if you have sprayed alignment lines on the (rented) hangar floor, it's still tough to move it in solo. I know guys who have rigged up VERY slow moving winches to gently pull the airplane in with a cable attached to all three gear. Others have custom built their own power towbars. Hangar rash just happens: lighten your wallet, ease your mind.

It was all I could do to push the plane in by myself. I pretty much had to put my head down and take a bit of a run at it to get over the hump. What happened was one side went up and the other side caught, causing the plane to kick to the left and catch the edge of the "T" in the hangar.
Hopefully the powertow will at least let me see what I'm doing. I use to have a golf cart when I lived in MO and it worked great as a tug.

We just got our jet back from the service center last week. We had a lav cart "nic" the lower half of the leading edge of the right wing about 6' from the end. The super small ding was just over 3/4" long and measured .046" deep. The out of spec limit is .040". This made the plane 'unsafe for flight' and we had to get a special ferry permit to bring it to the service center. It cost $133K and 10 days down time to get it repaired. All for .006 out of spec. Crazy!

That is a good tug. I have two of them - one old and another one older. They never fail to start and pull my 3000+ lb plane no problem. Good choice. Sorry about the rash.
