How many Hippy / Beatnik types have parked their TDIs?
How many beatnik types who bought their TDIs because of their supposed reduced carbon footprint have parked these cars in light of the VW emissions scandal?
How many have kept driving them and jumped on the class action law suits? What are their true environmental motivations?

I suspect the vast majority bought the the car as an appliance. It is just a "feature" that they wanted to get good mileage and not be a gross polluter. Many will see the dollar signs and jump on the free money bandwagon and make some lawyers very rich and the customer will get maybe $100.
I do see the real harm to each customer. Their car has diminished resale value, and it will not preform to the specs they were sold to meet. Billions will be spent by VW and the world will carry on.

You cannot advertise a car as a green diesel, and subsequently deny that the car was purchased for ecological reasons.
While I suspect a small portion of the buyers even considered the ecological impact of their car, VW has left their flank exposed, and will suffer because of their actions. I bought my diesel for one reason: Extremely low operating costs. Perhaps the question to be asked is, who would have purchased an alternate vehicle had they known VW was cheating? I have to admit that I would likely be driving the same car....

Go to the VW forum, it is full of people who are pissed at VW for the deception, and specifically because of the 'pollution'. And there is no reason for them to lie just yet...

BTW, Uncl: Hippy bashing is so 1970's. If you want to bash and label a group at least get it right. The proper derogatory term is environmental wackos.

I don't know a single enviro with a TDI. They all drive electric or hybrids. Which in itself is a joke - you should not drive a car at all if you are an enviro. All TDI owners I know bought for the mix of mileage, style and performance. There are many average owners that bought them like a Honda, just with better mileage. I bought because of the 6 speed, torque and mileage. I have not parked my car.

That could be as Houston's city attorney announced he was filing a $100M lawsuit against VW for polluting Houston's air.... wonder how many other cities, etc. will follow suit ?

In my case a TDi allowed me to feel a little smug vs. a hybrid or electric (more range, less batteries to pollute landfills). Guess that wouldn't work anymore, good thing I dodged this bullet and sold it a few years back... (as torquey as they are, I cannot bear shifting at 4000 rpm, it crushes my soul)

Since the emissions standards are the same for all new cars, it is hard to justify buying a particular model because you think it is "cleaner" than other cars (excluding electrics and hybrids). Most people probably bought TDIs because they had low fuel consumption and good performance, while being "equally clean" (emissions) as gasoline cars. The low fuel consumption is itself an environmental advantage, if you think that way. But now TDI owners have a car that is much dirtier than other cars, when fixed will (probably) lose some of its fuel consumption and performance advantages, and has lost resale value. That is a pretty good reason to be upset. Does it mean you park the car and walk everywhere? Not really an option for most people.

I know several people with VW 'clean' diesels. All of them are pissed off because of the deception and resultant pollution - that they all wanted to avoid - and I'm not aware of any class action suit up here to put $$ in their eyes. I was considering getting one for two reasons: operating costs, and low pollutants for its type of engine. Not now. There have to be cleaner operating diesels out there, but I imagine them vanishing in North America since sales were low here to begin with.
Note: I am not now, nor have I ever been a hippy, nor a beatnik, but I do have to breathe the air out there.
