I am going to speculate for a minute on this Oregon shooter.

1) all the news reports are stating this was a "20 year old male"

I speculate that he is NOT a white male.....

2) media outlets are saying that he asked everyones religion before he opened fire...

I speculate there were no Muslims in that class.

3) this is the same college that Alex Skarlatos (subdued the train shooter in france) goes to....

I speculate this is not a coincidence.

So from that, I will speculate that this was a deliberate attack on a college where a US service member attended as retribution for the foiling of the train shooter in France a couple months ago... probably not white and most likely a Muslim.

The takeaway for me is there WERE plenty of red flags that were not taken seriously......and THAT should be the emphasis in analyzing the incident.

More will come out in the days ahead about warning signs.

You'll never be able to stop people from wanting to do stuff like this....but sometimes they can actually be stopped.

Shooter was Chris Harper Mercer, 26 y/o. Some pictures of him online. Looks like a white or mixed race skinhead. No, not like a stereotypical "Muslim". Edit: he was born in England, moved to the US as a young child, father white, mother black, raised by mother in a middle class existed in California, moved to Oregon and was living with mother who was a nurse. Reportedly had a blog, wrote about how unknown people got famous through killing. Also reportedly had a dating site profile identifying himself as "mixed race", his views as "conservative Republican", and listing "organized religion" as one of his "dislikes". And reportedly (actually, I've just looked at it) had a MySpace page with pictures of IRA fighters. May or may not have posted about his plan on 4chan, a forum I've never heard of before that seems to be populated by idiots. Not a student at the school, it seems. Unclear if he had any connection to the school. Used an AR and one or more pistols. Edit: body armor too.

Columbine killers were crackers. Charles Whitman was as white as they come. The guy in the link below was white and fell on hard times and killed nearly 40 school kids in the 20's with bombs.

My wife and I were talking about the drug angle tonight. There's got to be some connection between all the late teen and early 20's shooters in these incidents (besides the easy answer of a gun), and I'd bet it has to do with the various medications that have been prescribed and dosed to them.
Why are today's kids regulated with the help of pharmacology? Is society just producing angry, messed up kids? I certainly don't remember this **** going on with anyone I grew up with at that age.

Locally, years ago, we had a suicidal guy on a city bus take over the bus (full of passengers) and drive it off the popular suicide bridge. He didn't get it over a really dangerous spot and the apartment building below cushioned the impact.

But still, I hope that all of you will join me in condemning the use of buses in every city, every where. --yeah, that last part was sarcasm.

It's not clear what he did. He may have wanted to kill anyone who professed any organized religion. See above about his apparent dislike for organized religion. In rural Oregon, you'll have to question many people before finding a religious person who self identifies as anything other than Christian.

Your opinion is wrong.

Sometimes, in severe depression / mental illness, you are so unmotivated / disorganised that doing anything is hard.
As the mental pathology is treated, this apathy / disorganisation can begin to lift BEFORE the mental pathology entirely resolves. The suicidal patient who was so amotivational that they couldn't be bothered to take action now regains some motivation before their depression lifts. This is the danger window when the risk of suicide paradoxically increases as the patient begins to improve. The risk of dangerous behaviour is actually a marker of efficacy of treatment.

Also, SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are now very commonly prescribed for a range of mental illnesses. This is not because doctors are getting kick-backs , or because the SSRI drug reps are the prettiest it's because the stuff works.
Does it work for everyone?
No.
Does ANY drug in existence for ANYTHING work for everyone?
No.
