Windows 10 will automatically update windows 7 and 8 this week

Turn off auto update now if you don't want this.

Windows 10 is now a 'recommended update' that starts automatically - Technology & Science - CBC News

I never have auto-update on anyway. I have it set to download, then notify/ask if I want to install. Glad you mentioned this though. I'll be sure to really look at whatever gets recommended.

Windows 10 is okay but only if you deliberately shut off / disable every single optional feature. Every single one of them is simply a "Big Data" oriented personal-data-mining effort. It's utterly shameless in that respect. Yeah - whore out my personal data so I can get better time-wasting news feeds - NOT!

Once you shut off all that crap and block all the connections you possibly can (one nice thing about running it as a virtual machine under Mac OSX which in turn is running little snitch and a few other goodies that squelch unwanted data flow) it's actually a pretty nice and stable OS.

So why can't Vista users get a free upgrade?

Win 10 killed Windows Media Center which one of my PVR's relies on.

Because it's 10 years old which means the hardware it's on is likely ancient and won't run Windows 10 well resulting in increased customer dissatisfaction and increased burden on support resources trying to a) assist customers and b) having to maintain compatibility for outdated hardware.

There is no benefit for them to do so, only downside.

I found this on ZDnet, and it seems to be doing a good job of blocking a forced Windows 10 update.

Just don't let KB:3035583 download. If you already have the popup, go in and delete the file.

If I wake up in the morning and find a Windows 10 installed on my system, I will drive straight to the main MS campus and raise holy hell.

The only thing I allow Windows Update to do is update virus definitions.

Eventually Microsoft will sneak Win10 in through one of those, I'm sure.

OK, I can see the file in the list of Windows Updates. How do I delete that update?

Good info - I've turned off auto update. I actually downloaded W10. Man, did it screw up my computer. I mean, the machine worked ok but or whatever reasons the display had thin flashes of light through it. I was able to backtrack to W7 and that fixed the issue.

Right click it, select uninstall. I did that, but the "Get Windows 10" icon is still in my tray...

I went back and looked and the update was installed with today's date. I uninstalled it again and it's still there. Unbelievable.

I hope this doesn't happen at my work. The print drivers we use don't support W10 and I will be screwed.

When in "uninstall programs" AFTER clicking on "control panel", click on "view installed updates". Search for that file and kill it there. No more W10 popups.

I posted a thread earlier, Joe Bob helped me on it.

Do what Dave said in Post #8 here:

If the KB:3035583 file has been on your computer, it has already downloaded dozens (maybe hundreds of files supported by Win 10. GWX Control Panel will remove them all. Just deleting the KB:3035583, still leaves all those other files on your computer. Quick and easy to run GWX).......Then change your update settings to make no changes till you pick which updates you want to install.

I want to thank MS for finally motivating me to get Linux installed on one of my laptops and starting the learning curve to dump Windows forever someday....Till then, Win 7 with a dual boot option to Linux.

I don't have any other W10 issues. I watch what is downloaded from Micro Limp. If I don't recognize from the brief description what the update is, I search for the answer and dump file updates that I don't need. Like keyboard updates for Swahili.

BTW, I had previously turned OFF auto updates but somehow it was on again. So it would be a good idea to verify. Wouldn't put it past the asshats at MS to figure a way to turn it on remotely.
