New Question on Floor Prep for Epoxy
Got a question on Floor Prep - before Epoxy
Painting took longer than expected so I haven't got any of my floor prep started. Now the weekend is here and I was planning on renting a cement resurfacer. Question: does it matter "when" I surface the cement. I.e., I haven't degreased yet, can I do this after the resurfacing or should I degrease first. I want to take advantage of the weekend to resurface the concrete so I'm hoping I can do this tomorrow and then spend next week degreasing, pressurewashing, etc.. |

Degrease first, lest you redistribute all the grease while grinding the surface.
After you finish all your prep, take a 1 foot square of poly and tape it down with duct tape... leave overnight.... if the next day there is moisture trapped under the poly, rethink the coating you want to apply... sealer or stain might be better than epoxy, if there is a lot of moisture..

Don't do it...
I did, and 2-3 years started peeling off... Good luck fixing it... If ANY water gets in behind it, from condensation or rain, etc, it will not stick... |

Surface prep is key for the success of any coating system... cleaning and degreasing are first.. often followed by chloride remediation (if on steel surfaces) then surface prep by creating a profile.. Those pesky organizations that set standard for paints and coatings are where the procedures come from.... NACE... SSPC... ASTM... Oh and wow... here is a guide from the manufacturer of one of the epoxy floor coatings... Epoxy Coat Installation Instructions Step 1: Clean and Sweep Step 2: Degrease... Or you could just smear that grease and oil around and have the coating come up...

Clean and degrease first. Then grind the floor.

Clean and degrease it first, then shot blast it.
But, we covered that in your other thread... Someone also mentioned testing for water migration through the slab. That should've been done long before you decided to put epoxy down on the floor. |

Just had one done by the pros they cleaned degreased. Ground -fillled cracks re ground. Epoxyed then put a poly urethane UV coating on top. Lots of grinding.
I would try it but the grinding is the key. This guy used some specialized grinder with a big vac I have no idea where you could rent one. I have seen a lot of hanger floors done with success and failure. The grind gives the profile that the epoxy can grip. Any oil or dirt the epoxy will lift. ![]() ![]()
