I think the 89 Targa was owned by a friend of the family. I know that their car was lost in the flood....could be this one or not.

For the newer cars, wonder if they would make great track cars once completely stripped, or are there too many interdependent electronics to make it work.

I have always heard that a car is saveable if it hasn't been ran into the water with the motor running/transmission turning. Obviously a complete flush/reflush of the motor/trans would be in order before even turniong over the starter, but I think the real issues are the mold in the HVAC system, and electrical gremlins.

The question is, was the water freshwater or salt water?

If Saltwater, you gotta flush them immediately. Fresh water buys you a bit more time but a month on, it's a crap shoot either way.

Sandy killed the electronics on my son's BMW.

I would think the older cars would be worth the trouble. Fairly simple, minimal electronics, good upside. The newer ones, hell no. A friend of mine has rehabbed several newer Jeeps that were freshwater flood cars, even after a full gut and clean and replacing ECUs, he still has random issues.

Any of these cars could be saved if you are willing to strip it to the last nut and bolt and rebuild with new electronics and anything else water damaged. If you want to build a race car or hot rod one of these could be a good start. If you just want a nice stock(ish) car, you would be insane to start here.
regards,
Phil

I bought a flood 87 Honda Accord LXI in 1989. Completely stripped it down, cleaned everything up, fixed the dents and painted it. Drove it across the country, racked up another 150k miles on it and sold it for $2000 more than I had in it.

I'm just sayin. Some of those older car would certainly be worth it. Just for the fun of the build!

The older 911s don't have that much "electronics", do they? A couple ECUs and a bunch of relays, I think. Seems those would be salvageable and restorable, and that even if they aren't, the mechanical parts have value. What's a G50 or a 3.2 worth?

With an older car it would be a good opportunity to upgrade. Modern fuse and relay box, rebuild the one ECU, replace the wire harness, modern ignition components, maybe ditch the EFI and put on some PMOs? That plus a lot of cleaning and upholstery and you're set.

Too bad they're Targas.

If the Fuchs on the $3,100 Targa are real, and it sells for that price, it's a good deal.

I would not replace a wire harness for fresh water, salt water maybe.

I suspect the ECU would dry out and work fine.

I would like to tackle the 997. What's he asking?

It is too bad they are all Targas or there would be some great shells there. Why only targas? The coupe guys wouldn't let the insurance companies have them?
