Dave, I wonder how that would be received by the home region for DE's?
|
that's what i was thinking.... i know it's "porsche's only" but at which point it stops being human... i mean, a porsche?
10%? 30%? do the flat four subaru transplants count? ;) (technically, if you avoided tech you could just run it and let everyone else wonder :D ) |
I was told when I inquired a few years ago that it was up to the region. That in reality it would depend on the turn out and if they "needed" more cars or if it was fully attended. You'd be kind of like spare change if they could use it. PCA suggests that a Porsche by definition must have a Porsche made chassis and a Porsche made engine. I wonder how many 914's are running VW engines or 912's for that matter?
Long live the V8 thread :) |
|
I'd like to see a Wankel conversion... very light wt. and small engine + lots of hp and a unique sound. Only drawbacks are the low gas mileage and low torque.
|
Do we have any Hollywood Types on the board that can do a soap on this . Porsche Fever, or The Guiding Porsche, How about The Porsche and the Restless.
I was thinking of The Electric Porsche myself,,, maybe a VFD driven 500 HP GE with a looooong extn. Cord. |
cool! maybe it would even scare the "factory5" crowd
__________________ dave 1973.5T Well the funny thing is I have 2 friends with factory five cars and they ARE scared, the 3.6 0-6 and the rest or just silly numbers for the cobra replica, on the street they can't get them to hook up as well. And both are running 400hp plus. Granted they sound cool, but I am running a short stroke chevy DZ 302, 10.5 1 rollers and all alluminun parted and polished heads, solid mount yadda yadda, the 911 V* sounds like a bat out of hell and make the hair stand up on the back of mens necks stand on end. and little kids run scared. I figure 400plus sitting in a 2500 lb chassis with of course the Perfectly stiff Porsche transmission, I did not build it cause I was cheap. The DZ pistond andcrank run 1000-1500 all day on ebay, and the rest off the mods and machine work mean i'm stting on 10k all day in this conversion(engine alone) I can buy a 3.0 with webbers and SSI's i saw yesterday for 5800. I built this car cause I wanted to. 400 HP revs to 7500 RPM and sounds better than a cobra running through sides pipes. Oh yeah and a torgue curv that can snap your spine like any turbo out there. I've seen the dyno rune for all these built motors, show me a dyno curve that lays flat at 300 from 2500-7500. To the question of can I run it, I wouldn't. I don't feel thats in the spirit of PCA, i would love to take it out and enjoy the track, anyone should be allowed to do that. But compete, thats just not fair. DE why not. I consider my self A Porsche file first and a car guy second, I love my Porsches more than any other car, But with tht said, its the car that gets the least amount of attention. I've had a 64.5 ragtop mustang and VW Beetle convert 73, within the past 2 years as fun cars for te weekends, and whenever i go anywhere they collect the everyman crowd, real geuine nice peolpe that you would enjoy to talk to on a regular basis. I have a red on black 3,2 carrera that most people won't even look at me in because they Assume I'm some pretentious porsche jackass. HMMMMMMMM. By reading all 30 pages of this thread I can see why. If your gonna let boxters on the track, or 914's with 3.2's, and a whole slew of non original Porsches, why not a bad ass 911 v8, this is a hobby and all in good fun!!!!!!! |
AMEN!
|
Agree 100%, I really like the looks of some of those V8 conversions and would love to see some Wankel's done!

My region (Rocky Mountain) has a specific rule excluding non-porsche engines from any DE class. It also excludes non-porsche cars so I believe this means they cannot run. However, it permits non-porsche engines in specific concours classes. Go figure. |
Dgraphic911's Conversion is absolutely astounding. It's not a hacked in V8. It bolts right up to the original motor mounts, Tranny (with a adaptor plate)for a very clean install.
The area in the front of the tub where alot of people cut for a oil cooler is where the radiator is mounted. All of this is incased in a very nice housing. Air comes in through the front spoiler and exits out the bottom. Returning it to a Porshe engine would be a piece of cake because nothing has been altered. It looks like it could have come from the factory, it's that slick. Sounds incredible..... |
SUPERCHARGED 911/VETTE

That corvette thing looked good right up until I saw that MESS of a tail! What in the world IS that (besides FUGLY) , an intercooler from MARS??
|
...I think you could do without the supercharger when dropping an LS-1 V8 into a 911...

Is an MSD made by porsche?
Are PMO's made by Porsche? Fiberglass Slant nose? 72 targa into a 996 convertible, but it has a 2.4 PORSCHE engine so it must be OK? RX 7 oil cooler? Cheapo's get a porsche unit! Oh yeah maybe they do that cause its cheaper and better. RS's clone going for 45K on ebay, hey its a clone!!!!!!! Turbo Look, no engine? OH my god this post is like freaking crack, is ther a way we can have Pelican remove it. I actually think noone really cares but its way to easy to start this argument. Die Thread Die Die thread Die |
Why don't we convert this thread into the worst Porsche hybrid you can think of. In fact, just state that you're already doing it - whatever it is - and incite some riots. This will keep the thread going another 6 years...
So for example, I have a 1956 356 Carrera Speedster with only 10,000 original miles, originally a museum car. Now I'm working on transplanting into it all the mechanicals from an Acura RSX Type-S. And I'm adding clear turn signals and a 1,000 watt stereo. |

Comments like these only encourage more interaction... Perhaps popping in a 928 motor in the back of a 911 would be acceptable too? Keep it German baby!!!! Live thread live!! :D SmileWavy |
I'm putting a 2.5 Turbo Subaru motor into a '70 911 S. Still a boxer engine, right? I'm also putting 20 inch chrome spinners on it. And doing a fiberglass slant nose conversion w/boxed rockers. And having it repainted with large metallic flake paint, in lime green. Early S bling baby!
Live thread, live! |

The Subie WRX motor in a 914... 300+ hp, and 40lbs. lighter than the original 2.0 motor from the factory..... |
Holly &^$*
Having started this thread several years ago I can not believe how much it has grown. I actually found it on a Yahoo search for a V8 Boxster.....later project maybe.
As for an update on the 911...I can tell you that I tracked the car on countless trackdays and loved it. It wound up with dry sump oiling, full RSR coil-over, full race cage, custom 930 gear box, fiberglass everywhere, and 2300LBS, then I got stupid. Thought I had to go club racing so I took the 500hp V8 out of the car and replaced it with 18k custom Porsche engine.....what a dumb &^$ thing to do. After close to $3,000 of dyno time, paying specialists for Electromotive to help get the car tuned properly and all for 275HP. Never, ever, ever again, after finally getting the car sorted out I was so damn sick of that thing that I sold it. The car is now in Chicago and running well for the new owner. So what next...well have also grown in the family dept. also and now need to carry around two little girls. Not wanting another pure race car I have built a 928 and yes it is a Chevy conversion, but felt the small block was nothing new and the car is 3200LBS. So a Chevy 454 Big Block now sits up front. Before everyone gets and image of a nose heavy dragster get this, the balance on the car with a light battery in back and all the sound insulation removed from the rear, is 52 front and 48 rear. The 454 makes 475hp and 500FT/LBs effortlessly, with a desent idle and will overpower the tires in 1st, 2nd and on a cold day 3rd gear. It is a track car and has seen 8 track day since the car was completed in May. A/C blows cold, it is fairly quiet inside, rides good and the girls are comfortable in the back seats, best of all I get to drive it everyday instead of the Audi sedan that is my back up. Best of luck to everyone and remember if you write the checks you damn well have the right to do what ever you wish to your car. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1136176908.jpg |

After chasing Keith's V8 911 around the track, all I can say is he did have it dialed in right. At CMP, he was turning 1:48's to my 1:53's In some ways, it is sad that he sold the 911 before the mods were completed to the 914-6 3.2. The mid engine track car has been heavily modified just so that it could keep up with his bow tie machine. (picture of 914 as it came out of the paint shop in Dec 2005)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1136190670.jpg Currently, his bow tie 928 is a little faster in the straights than 'the 82 3.6 SC seen in the background of the picture above. The SC makes up the difference in late braking, lighter weight, and cornering. Either the SC or the 914 could be modified so that they could turn 1:48s at CMP, but a bunch more checks would have to be written |
Hi Jim,
Jim is right, with 3200lbs it is a bit of a pig compared to the 2500lbs 911, and have promised myself I will not destroy the streetablity of the car trying to keep up. But while I am a little slower than Jims' 3.6 powered 911 which is quit fast and even slower then his highly modified 914 race car, I don't hang my hand over the top too often.
Have included some more pics of the car. As you can see the engine fills the compartment without being too tight. I can change the spark plugs without a problem and it does fit under the hood. Intake flow had to be sacrificed in order to get it under the hood but I didn't want a hood scoop. A custom fuel injection system is in the works, not that the 911 was a positive experience or anything but at least I will be able to regain my intake flow. Had to fab many parts to make this work as no one sell a kit that will install the 454. The Renegade kit works only for the bell housing adapter after that nothing else will work. The mounts have to be lowered, custom oil pan, custom headers, custom acc. brackets. Suppose a March set up would have worked but I wanted all the acc. as low as possible. The car cools great on the track with the Griffin radiator, a welcome change from the 911 which cooled O.K. I had gone to an electric water pump so that I could use a drysump system and it could just barely keep up. I also installed 6 piston calipers up front and 4 piston calipers in back, since I own Boxer Motorsports for brakes, that was fairly straight forward. Since everything else is Chevy thought I would weld up and redrill the wheel hubs to accept C5 Corvette wheels, 17 X 8.5 with 56mm offset up front and 18 X 9.5 with 65mm offset in back. Have a great day.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1136208898.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1136208964.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1136209037.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1136209511.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1136209591.jpg |

Hi Rob,
I went to CMP 7 days last year and 3 where with TurnOne. They run a great event and enjoy instructing for them. Does anyone know what the record is for threads, this has to be up there. Keith |
I wasn't going to say anything, as it would just add to the post count.
*DOH!* |
So you are using the stock 928 trans? Looks like a great swap. Nice work.
|
Thanks,
I am using the stock 85' transmission. Luckily it was in good condition as to rebuild does the Porsche reputation justice, $$$$. It is the tall ratio gear box and turns 2000rpm at 70, gear ratios feel good for engine. |

...And KS911, I look forward to seeing you at an up-coming T-1 event. Look for a car sporting the number 11. It's usually on a red Carrera. |

My only complaint is that you had to use a Chevy engine, what's wrong with a stroker Ford? :D I had one in a Capri, 650 or so HP, ten seconds in the quarter on the motor alone which made it very tempermental. That motor is slowly finding it's way under the hood of my brother's Kenne Bell super charged 5.0 liter Ranger. He's gonna dump the compression from 13:1 down to 7-5-8:1 so he can still use a blower. Kinda neat seeing all FOUR tires go up in smoke when he steps on the loud petal.
