I just read the first and last pages of this post...yeah...i missed a bunch of stuff...
I'm glad people think you can make hot rods out of porsches... Being one of the younger guys here I've found myself in possession of a 1967 912 (I'll go back to my own list when I'm done) and I'm considering an engine conversion...not now, but in the future... I know only a little about porsches, but DO know Subarus...and KNOW that Kennedy makes a subaru engine conversion kit. Well...here's the thought...getting 165 hp out of a 912 engine takes big bucks...I can BOLT that in with a 2.5 L subaru block, and not lose any of that great flat four sound... Leave the outside looking stock, and have a reliable daily driver (can you tell I hate tuning solexes?) see ya... sjd who can see all the purists turning guards red...in anger... |

Notice this post is self serving only!
For those of you that want to run with the 930's but just can't bring yourself to spend the dinero necessary. May be you are bonded in some metaphysical manner with your SC want 400 hp but can't bear the thought of modifying your mechanical soulmate, have I got a solution for you. Check out the 420hp 914 over in the 914 classified area. I built this car when I would have rather spent my time in the garage than in the house. Now that my life is normal again I need to reduce the toy count and need garage space. By the way it's quicker than the 930. By the way no 911s were harmed in the making of this car ![]()

Don't put a 2.5 Subaru engine in!!!!!!!!
Figure out how to get the 2 litre turbo in there - they can make 300+hp without THAT many $$$ in them (the STI ones ex-Japan make 280hp if you can find one).

Well actually i was toying with idea of putting 2-litre SAAB turbocharged engine in the back...lighter than flat six and extremply tunable.
Unfortunately it would be too much plumbing with air/water intercooler and radiator up front...

That sounds like a great idea, Goran!
Don't worry about the minor plumbing problems, you'll figure it out somehow. I think you should do the conversion and sell your 930 engine. To me... ![]() ![]()

I've turned out a couple of 290 hp WRX's from my buddy's shop (where I'm part time tech).
300 hp in a 912 would be pretty sweet, but the 2.0 engines cost too much right now... I can build a 2.2 or 2.5 block into what I want for what it costs to buy the 2.0...Better yet, I can get the 2.2 legacy shortblock (with the closed deck), throw on 2.5 heads, and a big turbo and I'm looking at 400 hp...all day. The Kennedy Engineering kit should work because the 2.0 is an EJ block like the 2.2 and 2.5... anyone know the dimensions of Mercedes C or E class headlights?? The big oval ones...?? *wink* sjd "NEW FORUM PLEASE!!! HOT ROD PORSCHES, BASTARDS, and other stuff" |

I know this a old thread, but I love debate.
Humm... 325hp for 20k dollars (on race gas) ![]() Or: 520hp for 4500$ (on pump gas) ![]() We build both. B |

BRM9148 :
That is why this post is staying alive so long. You have hit the nail right on the head. What kind of tranny would you have in the V8 conversion? Where is the radiator?

On a semi-related note, last week while heading into work on I10 a silver 914 w/flares passed me. I notices twin pipes out the back and it didn't sound like any 2.0 I ever heard. I caught up to him and held up 6 fingers. He smiled and held up 8. Traffic slowed so we conversed a bit...turns out it is a 350 V8, and his dad has a 914/6. Not purist, but a nasty little car. He said "nice car" to my SC, and then went off. Last edited by nostatic; 09-01-2002 at 03:09 PM.. |

Rick,
I'm a Renegade supporter, so.. complete Renegade conversion package which includes their bad-ass Ron Davis racing radiator. I played the radiator game for several years and finally got away from all the BS on the market and went with the RH radiator. This particular car has a beefed up 915. The owner didnt know me when he started gathering the parts and having things rebuilt. I personally wont build a conversion 911 without using a 930 4 speed with LSD. The gear ratios for the 4 speed are almost identical to a Munice 4 speed rock crusher... perfect for the torque of a SBC. It will pull itself from 2K RPM to 7k RPM in fourth gear just by romping on the loud pedal. WELLLL.. Porsche rumors are floating around a V8 in the 911 some time soon. B |

"Last time I checked this is the 911 Porsche forum"
Thats funny, because a 911 with a Chevy V8 is still a Porsche 911... Maybe its not as the factory or designers intended, but it still doesn't change what it is... I can see the purists not wanting to cut up and modify a classic, but when there are so many 911's that look so similar (1967-???), whats wrong with wanting more performance, more "exotic" looks without the expense of a "true" Porsche engine? You must really hate the guys that want to actually race these things, because they might wreck them... As for the Chevy engineering being crappy... thats a joke... Sure, maybe Porsche puts out a technically superior engine... But the basic architecture of the small block Chevy remained unchanged for almost 40 years... Is any of the design that Dr. Porsche designed still used? I doubt it... Look at all the different engine styles used in Porsches... Sure the conversion might be a little crude because the engine weights and compartment sizes are different, but its not like somebody having the engine hanging out the hood, etc... Its still a Porsche, and will always be a Porsche... |

I think my favorite was this from a few pages back:
"Why the hell do you have a Porsche in the first place if you like pushrod v-8s? It's akin to having a Supermodel with a 1st class from Oxford in Latin for a girlfriend and then slapping on a set of Pamela Anderson boobs and transplanting hooker's brain in so that it's easier and cheaper for you to get your kicks in the sack with her." Like you wouldn't want her in your "garage". RIIIIIIIIIGHT.
