Best time of the year for oranges, Sumo Oranges

Not that I don't love other oranges, but Sumo oranges are way up at the top of the list. It's basically a giant clementine, sweet, juicy with a loose skin that peels really easily.

THe good thing is that they are only available for a limited time of year. I think they only or mostly come out of Cali.

Blood oranges are tasty too, and I also only see them this time of year.

A friend turned me on to Sanpelligrino blood orange soda. I believe that it is only out for a short time each year.
I don't usually like soda, but that stuff is good.

May have to get a tree, if they are that good. Have a clementine, pink grapefruit, Washington Navel and a Meyer lemon already. Was thinking Valencia, so I could get the year round citrus fix, but will check out the Sumo. Don't care for the blood orange

Are the Sumo's at the grocery stores now? I will have to make a run to a fresh market store soon if they are. I do love them as well.

I'm jealous. My fruit mostly comes from Whole Foods. My understanding is that sumos are supposed to be like a giant clementine (I think those are what's sold as cuties and sweeties, right? easy to peel, small, sweet)

I'm originally from FL. One of my uncles is also originally from FL. He was working in the citrus industry from the time that he was 6. His dad working in a packing plant, and in the summers would take him and a friend to work. They would have them pull nails from the broken packing crates. I think he said they got something extravagant like a nickle a week or something. Other than some time in the military when he was younger, he retired from the Fl Citrus business. He has worked for something like the US Dept of Agr at some point too. He's in his 80s now, but he has a tree in his backyard that at one time had 13 or 15 different kinds of citrus fruit all growing on it via grafting. He said that one of his bosses had a tree that bore 31 different types of citrus fruit.

I've got a Whole Foods about 1/4 mile from my apt, and I've been getting them for about 3 weeks.

Mom's Honebell tangerines, kumquats, and pumelo have been going nuts, neighbors lemons, more honeybells, more kumquats, etc. too.

I just tried Sumo's for the first time a couple of weeks ago - from Whole Paycheck. They are fantastic and I have bought sereral times since then.

Great fruit. Just got some. Anal reamage at $3.99 per lb. five fruit was $16. Haha.

I got two yesterday and they were super sweet.

I pay the same thing here. That’s what they cost every year.

Exactly. That’s one of the reasons that it’s good that they are only available for a limited time. I go through a bunch this time of year. My wife allows me to buy a bunch because I have such a limited tome to get them each year.

When my wife moved to SoCal from the PNW she freaked out to see citrus fruit tree growing in peoples front yards... many with a pile if fruit underneath.

Any of you guys tried the Minneola tangelo?

There are some houses in my neighborhood with citrus trees.

I have had minneola tangelos. They’re tasty.

I love these things. They are ugly, but taste great!

Me too. Its available all year. The oranges are only available this time of year, and are great in an old fashioned.

University of California Riverside has a citrus tree museum and the region is home of the Naval Orange.
I still go to a private grove to get my Oranges, Valencia's (4014) for juice in the summer and Naval's (4012) for eating in the winter.

We have the advantage of buying along Hwy 126 in Fillmore and Piru for Valencias (best juicing oranges). Wife just got some great Blood Oranges at Trader Joe's.

I'm running out of pink grapefruit. Down to about 6. My tree is small and only produces a few dozen a year. I think I'm going to work on the tree this year and see if I can make it suffer.

I put in two Meyer lemon trees which was a mistake. Way way too many lemons.

Frost/freeze killed my blood orange and my navel orange. The trees grew back but I have Valencia's and bitter orange now. The Valencia's taste pretty good but are seedy.

I have one weird tree. It produces very round lemon sized fruit. They are not sour but also not terribly sweet. The taste is citrus, but different.

It was supposed to be a White Grapefruit, but I expect it was mislabeled. Anyone have a clue what this thing is?

So, I have 2 full orange trees, 3 dwarf orange trees, 2 full size Meyer lemons, 1 pink grapefruit and one "I don't Know".
