The other day I got a call from, me. Yes, I looked down at the caller ID and realized I was calling myself. My full name and cell number appeared. I had to pick it up. There's no telling what good stuff I needed to say. Unfortunately, there was no answer on the other end. Usually I'm more talkative.

and let's also make drug abuse illegal! That way the criminals would stop! Spoof calls come from out of the country. No way to prosecute. Even if they were in country, they would just move across the street and start up again.

I when we contemplated retiring I visited a web site that offered health insurance information. I entered my email and Dashlane autofilled the form, including my phone number. I got 32 calls one day from probably a dozen different numbers. The number of calls tapered off, but a year later I still get one or two a day.

All too common, and annoying. The simple, zero-cost solution is to never answer calls from any number you don't immediately recognize or which is in your contacts "whitelist". Simple, easy, foolproof.
The new tactic of "voice mail drops" without ringing the phone at all are a lot more frustrating since it takes longer and more effort to delete those messages. This is starting to catch on and it's only a matter of time before VM becomes even more useless than it presently is (one of my pet peeves involves VMs saying "call me back", another similar one is text messages that say "OK" - like no shyte sherlock - once I see I miss a call from you I know what to do, and if I see my text is received I assume you understood it unless you tell me otherwise - sheesh!) Time-wasting nonsense all of it...

As a business I worked at we always answered the phone. It is a business and you never know what customer might call. We were getting 4 or 5 of the BS calls that were supposed to be from Google to update our listing. WTF indeed, We would tell them to google us, it is all correct. That never worked. Even if you bother to hit the buttons to update and talk to someone, it would just hang up automatically.
I finally heard from one "expert" that said many of those calls are not intended to do anything but get the person to answer the phone. It was nothing but a agency that was paid to make the calls, they did not have to have results of any contacts, just the phone getting answered was enough to charge the client. They would make a few million robo-calls and make a few hundred bucks. Easy money. Total waste of time for everyone.
