Shifter rotation orientation?

Been playing around with getting my shifter into it's best position. Turned a shifter extension ala John Walker (I'm a tallish guy) but now it's digging into the side of my fat leg more since it's higher. Also have sport seats, so I'm lower in my body position. I noticed that the upper half of the shifter (the dog leg) is pointing towards the driver a bit, not straight back. I noticed this in my brother's SC as well. I know these tend to come loose down below, so I'm wondering if someone got the rotation wrong during a repair. Anyone know what factory setup is? And if I want to rotate mine away from my fat thigh, I assume I have to rebraze/weld down below?

Cant answer your question about adjusting it but I did go look at my '79 SC and when mine comes straight back it is in alignment with the parking brake handle not slanted off to drivers side like yours.

Heat the shaft with a torch below the boot and bend it over to where it clears your leg and the seats

As always, thanks for the great advice John. I heated it up right above the dog leg and eased it over until it was pointing straight back. Put my extender back, went for a drive and.....aaaaaaaahhhhhh!! No more leg interference at all. And the shift knob falls above my leg now instead of right in the middle of the thigh. I rather enjoy the reduced effort as a bonus. Shifts are a little longer, but easier too. One of the best mods I've done to the overall comfort and ergonomics of the car. 2000 miles to Rennsport here I come!

It all depends. The shift lever is a two-piece lever joined by an epoxy-like glue.

The factory alignment is straight back along the fore-aft axis of the car. At some point in time, the top half separated and was re-attached to the lower part.

- If weld-repaired, your reheating and bending to realign should be good.
- If re-epoxied, your reheating could have compromised the bond. Depends on the amount of heat and where localized.

Inspect the lever joint for signs of a weld bead. If visible, you're good to go.

I’m interested to hear more about how that cell phone magnet is mounted. How did you attach it to what appears to be the HVAC panel?

Camera angle. It's the Rennline clock mount.

hope that heating and bending it will not brittle the shaft and hope it does not break when doing a hard shift...
