damage on my case... is this an issue?
I noticed that something had fallen into my recently machined case half and damaged part of the mating area and edge. (apparently someone knocked something off a shelf and it fell)
Does this need to be repaired? Is this acceptable still? Please look at pictures and comment. Thanks!!!! ![]() ![]()

I would just take a flat stone and wrap it with some 600 grit sandpaper and just slowly run over the area until there is no burr left then stop, you will be fine

A Steve said not a big deal if it is smooth and no lip do not worry too much-it is more to the inside of the case......but, i would send the picture to the machine shop who did the damage and was not careful with your engine case..

There are 2 dents where the mating occurs as well as a dent on the outer edge.

the edge is flat, just a couple of dimples/dents and the outer edge is slightly hit.

By the picture it looks to me like that was preexisting when the machine work was done. I don't se any distortion to the machining Mark's, and you say there is no high metal, which would confirm this. If that had happened after machining, that metal would have been displaced causing the adjacent metal to be high. If the mating surfaces are smooth you are good.

+1, Don't worry about it. Thanks goodness you missed the Journals, then we would have a another story here. Just be mindful and keep cats away, darn hair can kill your engine. :-)

I did notice a small 'knick' on the edge of one of the journals. The only reason I noticed was from the light bouncing off it and made it shine more than the journal itself. My fingernail catches on it when I run it along the edge. I don't think it should be an issue as it is really small and I should be able to file it down on the outside edge of the journal to smooth it out slightly.

Much ado about nothing, the case sealant will fill that void very nicely.
Stop worrying.

Ouch, okay if there is a high spot, you must take it out as it will cock eye the bearing seat and potentially bind the shaft or accelerate the bearing wear or worse affect the hole rod assembly up to the pistons/cylinders. Just be very mindful how much you take off, this must not be a rush job.
BTW, if you use orange 574 sealant on the original pic of the dent, sealant will dissolve away, again do not worry about, the two little triangle dimples will fill in and stay solid because the other case half will seal it with 574. Quote:

I would smooth out the half moon looking defect. Lots of stress risers there.

Thanks Snitzler… I'll double check to make sure the top is smooth and flat.
