Window keeps coming out of track, found this part in the bottom of the door

Hi, my driver side window came out of the ‘clamp’ that scissors up and down inside the door. I pulled it all apart, reseated the window, couldn’t see a way to hold the window in place so just fit it in snug and did a few up and down tests. Seemed fine. I put it all back together, half hour later the window popped out again.

Also I found this cylinder at the bottom of the door, looks like the window would into the groove but I’m not sure where it might have come from.

Any ideas appreciated.

The thing in your hand is the Pivot Pin. It allows you window regulator spring to operate your window. It has failed and needs replacement.

Do a search here with this term and find many threads on the topic.

The pin itself comes in four configurations and you need to get the correct one by measuring the size of the one you have and note the ends are perpendicular to each other.

Might have been from a previous regulator if yours still goes up and down.

There's always confusion when it comes to this piece. The part that's broken is not available you have to make one. The part that's available is for the center of the spring.
They are sometimes confused and both called pivot pins.

I just love to see people fabricate stuff for our old cars.

I go into a hardware store browsing the racks. guy asks me if he can help me find something. I tell him what I need to fab a part for an old porsche and he just walks away shaking his head.

FWIW. The earlier cars like mine did not have the second pin. Not sure when it changed.

Over the years, 20 i've owned this 72, I've had several problems with the window coming out of the lift in the door. I know the issue is the window restriction in the door frame slots or slides, whatever you call it.

So rather than fix that I've just tried a better glue. Well most glues don't work well on glass so last month when it happened again I used a glue I use to patch the bottom of my little sailboat. It drys really hard so I'll see how it works but I really need to replace those rails or whatever they call them.

Here's the replacement bolt (with a low profile flat head and square shaft) that I stalled to hold the spring in place of the failed aluminum piece.

And just to be clear, when everyone talks bout the window regulator pin, they mean part 1 in this diagram, not part 2 (center pin)? The spring uncoiled and hooked on 3.

I just want to make sure that the part 910392 or 910394 is what I am looking for.
The real question is does anyone have a clue as to how to figure out if it is the 23 mm or the 26 mm? I went to check the other door and that one was unfortunately missing as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Ok so I finally found a bit of time, pulled everything out of the door.... I can’t see anything broken. It’s possible the pin I found in the bottom of the door was from a previous failure because I don’t see where it could be missing from.... the pins appear to be in place and everything works ok.

The last time I thought that, I reseated the window, buttoned everything back up and it popped out again.

Are there any other things I should look at? Could it be the dried out quality of the rubber in the channel that grabs the window, old and dry let’s go easily? I’m not sure I want to glue the window in the track like a previous poster.

Thanks

Likely the pivot had failed and a PO replace the mechanism and didn't do a good job seating the glass in the U channel.

Remove the rubber U from that channel and check the channel carefully to make sure it is not rusted badly. Mine was so it could not grip the rubber/glass. Clean the channel and rubber thoroughly. Ibn theory, the rubber is seated on the glass edge and then the rubber/glass is pressed into the U channel without adhesive. The glass/rubber really needs to be PRESSED into the channel. I did both sides of my 83 cab a few years ago and the windows work perfectly.

Welp, this time I pulled everything out of the door.... cleaned the track, scrubbed the rubber spotless, squeezed the track gently in a vice to close up the ‘mouth’ where the window sits, put the rubber on the window first as you suggested, made sure the fit was super snug after putting it all back together. No glue. So far so good.

It seems the track spread open at the top + the dry rubber was essentially letting go of the window when coming down. I didn’t think that could be it because the window falls easily with gravity, but that must have been it. I’m glad I learned all about the inside of the doors. I’m glad I didn’t have to spend money on a repair. But holy crap what a ****ty job... trying to get the track back into the door, get the regulator motor back in place, get window switches wired back up.... more of a pita than doing my suspension in its entirety. Lol... probably a 2 minute job for someone experienced. What I wouldn’t give to know the tricks of the assembly line trade. Oh well, it was a win-win in the end. Thank you so much for all your help pelicans!

There is a hole to the left of the spring in your photo where the pin goes. Unless your model is somehow different from the other examples shown.

You are correct, however the slot in the piece i found in my door should be for the tab in the centre of the spring to fit into no? Now I'm confused lol... I see the hole you're talking about and the other versions that have a pin there, but can't see what a pin in that location would in fact do... the window seems to be working fine now.

With the pin in the correct hole, the spring acts like a counterweight to make it easier on the motor and associated parts. Yes, it will work in your current configuration but the window action will be slower and harder on the motor and it's transmission. The difficult part was getting the regulator out, the fix is now easy. A simple carriage bolt in the hole with two nuts (as others have done) is the 50 cent fix.

Hmmmm, I took a look across the web for pictures of Genuine Porsche Part: EL W-CRANK # 911 542 003 28 (the number on the crank in my door) and don’t see a pin in that hole on any of them. Admittedly some of the pics looked like used eBay parts which could be broken off to begin with but a few looked like new replacement parts. Our host doesn’t have a pic of that part number unfortunately.

I’m thinking the multiple versions of the crank might be confusing all of us lol. Hopefully I’m right, I really don’t want to open up the door again.

Two pics I found of my part number sans that 3rd pin...

Do the fix. It’s worth it. Takes a few minutes and then the window action is smooth like “butta”
