Turbo Brakes Extremely Noise *HELP*
Help me folks.
I just got the Big Red Turbo 4 piston brakes put on my 1977 911s, with Pagid Orange pads, and they are LOUD!!!! They emit a super loud high pitched screach louder than tires squealing, when applying almost moderate to hard pedal pressure. What can I do to fix this??? I realized that there would be some squealing and additional noise due to the hard pads, but is this going to keep happening? Also, what is a good break in procedure for this setup. I will not be tracking my car for a while, so I will have to use streets/parking lots. Please help me. Thanks, Jason French

Most huge brakes are underworked on the streets. They tend to glaze a bit and make noise. Try heating them up with several stops from 60 mph or so. This should wear off some of the glaze and they should (hopefully) quiet.

Jason, we use pagid orange pads on our race cars and they are loud! The noise will not subside, I'd change to a street pad until track days. They squeel until there worn out.

You have the pagid oranges which are meant for track use. They are very, very noisy and you can forget about them being quiet for street use. I have 930 brakes and pagid orange for the track. The pads are so easy to change, take the plunge and buy a set of street only pads. You occupants and wheels will appreciate the quiet, low dust alternative.

OK, sounds like I may need to get some street pads then.
Is there anyone who thinks that these pads may quiet down once heat cycled? They are EXTREMELY loud, ear drum shrilling screeching! I appreciate all the input. Jason

Jason,
They will never quit down under normal street use. Take the plunge and buy street pads........

Same experience here. Pagid oranges were quite loud on the street.

I have the same issues with Pagid Oranges, get a street set.. Applying permatex blue anti squeel well help, as will chamfering the front edges, but it will not go away even after they are heat cycled.

I use Pagid oranges on the street and they are essentially silent. No squealing for sure. My application is in Carrera brakes, though. I thought the phenomenon of the "loud squealing Big Reds" was due to the calipers actually flexing somewhat and allowing the pads (especailly racing pads) to vibrate? Am I wrong?

My Pagid Oranges squeal like a sorority girl. To quiet them, I do a couple of hard stops occasionally, which cleans off some of the crud, and makes them quiet for a day or so.

Pagid Orange pads are notorious for their noise when cold. The larger the pad the more noise. Get Some Pagid Sport Blues of Ferodo 2500s for a nice dual purpose pad that won't squeel.
Letting the pads get packed w/ debris makes it worse.

There's no good reason to waste expensive Pagid Oranges on street driving. They're not particularly good pads until they're hot, which is going to be very rare in street driving, unless you're circling the same block again and again, and braking like a maniac.
It's so easy to change pads, get street pads for the street, and track pads for the track.

You can't possibly bed in brakes using mall parking lots and the like. You need to do half a dozen gentle-to-moderate stops from about 60 to a walking speed, another half dozen hard stops from 80 to about 20 with the last two just short of lockup--between all these stops let everything cool down thoroughly, like for a couple of miles of brakeless cruising--and then one final stop from 130 or so to a stop just short of lockup all the way. Then don't touch the brakes again (foot or parking) and simply coast to a stop, put the car in gear and let the brakes cool for about 15 minutes.
Not that I'm so smart and experienced that I know this, it's the marching orders I got from Steve Weiner of Rennsport Systems after I installed his Turbo brakes system with Ferodo pads. Stephan

I agree with Jack. Pagid orange are also quite hard on rotors and it's not worth wearing out $300 pads on the street, nor the wear and tear on your rotors. OEM or similar sets are fine for the street.

Ferodo pays for the street? Good idea or no no?

I've been running Pagid Orange for around 6 years on the street and track. Here are some data points from my own experience:
1. '86 Carrera with stock brakes. Quiet on the street and good on the track. I used some brake quieting goop on the backs of the pads. 2. Same '86 Carrera with floating 930 rotors in front with 993 calipers and 930 brakes in back. Extremely loud. So loud I scared a horse in a passing trailer and caused a pedestrian to cover his ears. I now run them on the track only. If you have pre-90 stock brakes with their small pads I don't think you will find that Pagid's make noise. Unlike other race pads, Pagid Orange pads stop fine when cold. My experience has been different than Chris CStreit's; I've found them very easy on rotors. That may be because my street driving does not involve many stops or stops from high speed. If it wasn't for the track, I think my pads would last for many years. Speaking of rotor wear, after 3 years of track use with Pagid Orange pads (on the track) and Porsche pads on the street, my rear 930 rotors measure new! The pads wear out but not the rotors. (The Coleman front rotors were worn out.) -Chris (the slower) |

I'm ( again) with Chris B on this one...
I run Pagid Orange on my stock 85 Carrera and they are the best combo street pad/ track pad I've found. The new Ferodos may be as good but I haven't tried them yet. Also...not loud ( on 2 piston calipers....any 4 piston calipers using Pagid Orange tend to be loud). Also, very *easy* on rotors....what's all this about hard on rotors ??? Anyway...some help for you 4 piston guys...might not cure noise completley but: - before you install, file a small 45 degree edge on at least three sides of the pads. If you're not sure how they're installed, do all 4 sides. - a "slight" amount of hi temp brake grease on the "edges" of the metal backing pad...don't get it on the brake surface...but only a smidge on the edges that contact the calipers. - use the acrylic 3M aluminized stick-on anti rattle pads on the backside of the brake pads. Not that brake "goo" that is offered for this purpose... as it tends to grab the dust seals and take them out when you remove the pads. - When you're all done, the squeeking should be substantially reduced or even eliminated.
