The old Red Rocket ('78SC w/ modified 930 engine) would trap 0-100-0 in 13 seconds, I did that often. Gear limited top end was 145mph. 0-145 was just a few seconds more, did that all the time as well. Not a lot of fear when you can get up there and back down real quick.

135 on I 57 en route to Carbondale for an old boys rugby event. Long, flat section with great visibility. Buddy asked me how fast we were going. I told him to look as I was too busy focusing ahead.
Of course, he had to tell everybody. Oddly, nobody asked for a ride ![]()

Never flatted this car, but there’s a set of desolate sweepers near me that like to be floated through at 120-ish on a regular basis...

Flat out on the autobahn was 140. Porsche said that my 1969 911E' 5 speed was 135. German speedos in those days were notoriously optimistic so I figured 130 plus or minus. The front end was real exciting light. Not sure the 185/70's XWX's were on the pavement. It cruised real comfortable at 120.

I hit the redline in top gear. the car was nicely in the power band and wanted to go faster. According to the owners manual that's a smidgen over 150mph. It felt a bit dangerous so I slowed down to 120mph LOL

Highway 50 in northern Nevada is a fun road. It has curvy mountain roads, then it opens up to a downhill slope into a WIDE valley with no intersections at all and the next mountain pass way way off in the distance. Downhill it was difficult to keep the speed reasonably close to the speed limit. I have an automatic speed governor that is voice activated, my wife yelling SLOW DOWN so no high speed runs on that trip. I have little doubt lots of people have found top speed on that road. There is simply no roads that intersect and it is a long straight road between the mountain passes.
I did notice a clump of cars approaching in the distance, and no passing. Sure enough a cop was in the lead and as we passed in the opposite direction he was pointing downward indicating I show reduce speed.

Why in the heck would you want to try and go so fast in an old car based on the type 1 VW bug?

My original post was:
283 km/h. 175,8 mph. 1978 911 Targa Then a question for you: do you find your own sarcastic question constructive and serious? Last edited by Classic 911; 11-25-2020 at 10:39 AM.. |

maybe it's because the '78 911 SC was quoted as having a top speed of 135-140. so unless you have unreasonably tall tires or a really tall 5th gear, that speed seems awfully optimistic. where does the extra 35-40 mph come from?...

Engine and gearing. Read my original post. An original 3.0 SC engine is not able to produce 7200rpm in 5th gear, mine does. My top speed is not optimistic, it is proven. PS: there is no need for sarcasm, it is not forbidden to use a polite tone of voice.
