911SC v 964 Engine Compartment Differences
Without going into a lot of irrelevant detail, I have been working on an EFI conversion for my SC, using elements of the Bitz kit integrated with a 964 intake plenum (plastic version). It was my intent to use the 964 air filter as well.
So the engine with intake parts except the air filter housing is in the car, no issues there. However when it came to installing the air filter housing there is a big problem. It's a no-go. The part of the housing that goes on the engine (I made an adapter piece to replace the 964 air flow meter) no problem. However there is no way the filter element and outer housing will work. There is a major interference between the outer cover and the oil filter for sure, and also possibly the decklid hinge if the cover could be put in place. Was there some change in the 964 engine compartment from the G body cars? This question is mainly for information because there's no way this can be made to fit. Are there significant size differences between the 964 and 3.2 AF housings that make that viable? It looks like a K&N arrangement is in my future.

I worked on a 1982SC fitted with a 1992 964 engine. The filter housing went in just fine. I don't see the problem.

That is interesting. There is definitely a problem with this one. AF cover absolutely will not go past the oil filter. No clearance.

here's mine back in 1994 in my 1976 C3 ![]() and the 3.8 993 I installed in 2000, no blower and the air box face was also opened up so the frame is the main part still there

IF the oil filter is a problem, maybe remove it? It's a little bit messy but ... you can clean the mess.

This is our 3.6/3.8L 1992 964 air box modification - - but we also have an oil breather catch can in that area - - you should not be having a problem fitting the 964 into you SC . . .

The solution to my issue was to remove the "snout" from the air cleaner. After that no problem The problem wasn't that the inner housing would fit, it was that the outer housing and filter wouldn't go in past the oil filter. And that was because of the snout.
