Looking forward to it! I just saw some professional pictures from the last time it was held at the port and it looks like an amazing venue!

Quite frankly, the parking lot across the street had twice as many cars and a much better selection of owners . Anyone can budget 100's of thou$and of $$ and create something nice , but the "real"
moms and dads are the soul of Porsche. |

Well stated. Not sure how the whole movement went the way of the wealthy hipster crowd. I really thought it was intended to honor those with grease under their nails and scraped knuckles, and the cars with a few dings and rock chips, that are drivin over 5000 rpms. Too bad, luftgekult is a cool name that unfortunately seems to be more interested in being exclusive to the best of the best, pristine paint and polished, and making money.

Nice pics and thanks for sharing!
A bit of a bland venue, no? And people had to pay to display their cars?

There are plenty of low key, air cooled Porsche gatherings already in LA. Sherwood used to organize a monthly one, and it's still running. This Sunday in fact, 7 am, UA theater parking lot in La Canada. Literally "under" the intersection of the 2 and 210 freeways.

Agree and both well stated. I missed this year's event, and hate to pile on.. but after checking out a few of the Luft 8 youtube videos and hearing the commentary I'd have to agree... its just sooo different now. It almost stings when they speak about a custom mod on an old 911, something we've been doing for years.. saying " oh look on this old car, they're trying to mod it like a Singer." Really? And then all the check-book mechanics, nice cars but when you as about something specific, the owner has to check with the guy who does the work to tell you what it is or what's been done! WTF? Hey, it's cool, hipsters have the right to play too.. but it sure dilutes the flavor.

The rich man has been stealing everything from us for years, this is just another example of it unfortunately. Looks like a bunch of rich LA wankers cars on display anyways. Yawn.

How about just proving you've driven the car more than 5k miles in the past year?

![]() I've been to a few Luft shows and didn't really think the vibe or cars this year were any different than previous years. Main difference I saw was more 964/993 and fewer long hoods.

A quick defense of lots of the folks who were at Luft; I drove from Dallas to San Francisco, down the PCH to LA for the show, and back to Dallas to get back for a work week starting this past Thursday (with a helping hand from Hi-Tec in Marin who had a replacement hi-torque starter after mine pooped the bed in Albuquerque; found some good steep parking lots to stop at in the meantime!), and I can speak for several of the other cars parked around me in the show that there were more than a few high-mileage, hands-on folks in attendance. The road-trip for me was 4,006 miles, and we had a blast. Had an awesome time meeting so many people, and ogling some really special cars. Got some great advice for a few future projects on the car as well. My 3 year old loved it too, though I'll admit he flew with my wife to San Jose to meet up this time after we had driven from Dallas to Indianapolis for Luft 7 last year. My wife wasn't about doing that again!
There are plenty of big check kind of folks at Luft, and I wouldn't poo-poo the whole event because of those people. And I'm not convinced that having a lot of wealthy people putting lots of money into great restos, builds, and shops is such a bad thing for the hobby at large. Either way, we met so many great folks, and after road-tripping for the last two are looking forward to road-tripping to the next one too! Plenty of memories to be made, even if your checkbook isn't so huge. ![]()

Lots of assumptions being made on this thread about those that attended and showed cars at Luft. I talked to several owners and know several owners and in many instances the owners did their own work. Not everything you saw was a concours, high dollar hot rod or time warp. There were plenty of drivers on hand and plenty that were at the start of their journey into being transformed into whatever the owner decides.
I was parked next to a 68 912 that was a flood car and the owner recently bought the car and is slowly repairing it himself. It barely made it into the event on its own energy. And yeah there are plenty out there that may not have the skills or the time to do their own work. Does that make them a bad owner? Some seriously jaded folks here if that’s what you think. What many don’t realize is that the Luft organizers were only able to accept 25% of the cars that were entered and they had already decided that they wanted new/different cars. 200 cars were accepted and another 100 cars were brought in by Porsche. Canepa had some cars there as did Emory and a couple other builders like Singer because they represent the extremes of the hobby and people want to see that. Next year I’m fairly certain my car won’t make it in which is fine, I’ll still attend and check out what’s there as I know it will be a different set of cars, owners and something new to see and learn. Now on to what this thread was made for…. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
