Confirming gearbox without serial?
Looks like the serial/type was grounded off. Are there any other details on the gearbox that would help confirm it to be a matching gearbox? Maybe a date code etc?
Only other number I could pull off was a ‘12’

It's common for the serial # boss to have been defaced like that
'72/73 was the first use of 915, 5th in the shift pattern is off to the right of the H pattern and up, the older 901 or 911 1 is to the left of the H and down/reverse is left and up , it has a Mg case that tends to blacken w/ age here is what they look like ![]() ![]()

By matching, you mean the type of transmission which came with your car when new? It would help if you listed the car or engine you are trying to match. The gear box looks like it is from a 1972-3 car, though, based on the type of cross lever (straight) and the fact that the clutch cable uses a hole in the rib on which the serial number once was. Plus the provision for a mechanical speedometer cable.

You can figure out what type it is (year its correct for) but you'll never be able to confirm if thats the exact one that came with your car when built, because the serial number isn't there to prove it.

I'd assume "someone" filed the number off the transmission due to non matching? I can't imagine another reason.
What am I missing?

The serial number boss is the lowest part of the transmission and not uncommon for them to scrape away after many years of driving.

So I had my shop check the housing side cover & guide fork plate. It looks like the dates don’t line up. 😔

More than a few owners destroyed a 915 transmission trying to drive it like an American muscle car. A few power shifts, and no rev matching will destroy syncros. Often it was cheaper to buy a used transmission from a totaled car then rebuild the 915. Not uncommon then or now.
