930 Cam Seal Leaking on One side, questions about options
Hi
Maybe 3 years ago the cam case seals were done on my 930 but they have started to leak again. I'm not sure I can hold the garage accountable who did it in the first place, plus I'm now in another country with the car so I can't take it back to them anyway. I'm sure they should have lasted longer than 3 years thats for sure, actually its more like 2.5 years and the more I think about it the more annoyed I am to be honest. The Turbo side isn't leaking but it might be a little wet. The non turbo side definitely has a leak (has an area where a drop accumulates) so I have a few questions. 1) I assume this isn't a high pressure area so won't have a higher leakage when driving the car and I can still drive it as long as I keep an eye on the oil level? The big question, should I pull the engine again and do both sides or leave the engine in the car and just fix the side with the drip leak as that can be done with the engine in the car, what do you think. Price is an obvious saving here but is that the right thing to do? I've also heard of people putting very low pressure values in the oil lines so when the car is sat for a long time, the oil does not accumulate. This might not be a great explanation but is this something worth doing as well whilst I'm having some work done on the car. Oil line restrictors, is this what they are called? The car isn't a garage queen so I was looking to get some honest (scary thing to say on the internet) feedback about the best options. Thanks Scott

Scott... there are a number of seals on the "cam case." Exactly what seal you are referring to? (Oil creeps so it may appear coming from one area but in reality it's coming from another.)
2.5 years is rather a short time period for work done to fail in terms of sealing. Assuming this is a gasket or o-ring failure, I'd suggest the work done being suspect. The exception to that is if a part failed. Bottom line, it's difficult to say who or what's to blame until a "forensic study" is done on the genuinely leaking area. "Restrictors" increase oil pressure. I forgot where those are placed. Am not sure they prevent oil from accumulating when the car sits for a long time. Why are you wanting to do this? Driving with oil leaking? Probably very few Porsche's on the road that are leak-free! Concern arises when oil leaks on a hot exhaust. It's a potential fire hazard. I've never heard of a 911 oil fire but have heard to watch for oil leaks that get on the exhaust.

well? yes it is very possible that you right side camshaft cover o ring or gasket are leaking.But,before you start taking things apart look at you banjo fitting seal and the cam oil line through bolt seal....like this on the black arrow

How we located leaks at the dealership was by adding fluorescent oil dye to the tank, then have the customer drive it around for a few days, then put it up in the air and check with a black light.
Dye kits are available from amazon, among others. |
