Rear Seat Lock Help

No luck on Rennlist, hoping you guys can help. I called Pelican about this, they said they'd call back, but never did...

During previous ownership the rear seat lock knob came unscrewed. I can't figure how to get it back on. The spring loaded pin is still in there, so looking for directions on how to take the mechanism apart or ideas about how to get the little knob screwed back on.

It looks to me like the stud is sheared off, so the knob has nothing to screw on to. Unscrew the knob on the other seat and compare.

If you need to remove the seat back to work on it, unscrew the big slotted head bolt on the outside mounting point and you can pull the seat back. Careful not to strip the bolt though. On some cars they are a ***** to remove.

Yes, maybe it is sheared off. I was thinking the spring just pulled it into the hole. Don't want to risk doin the same to the other one. Pelican can't find the part...never called me back.

My 84 doesn't have this feature, so I cant verify anything, but...

Does the hole the pins lock into go all the way through? Maybe you can take a small screw driver from the opposite side and push the springloaded pin back out.

reviving this thread with my rear seat lock puzzle. the pins are present, but there seem to be no some sort bracket for them to go in. nothing has been modified or removed, no holes in the carpeting whatsoever. possibly came from the factory without locking rear seats? any known aftermarked or home DIY solutions for this?

If you look in the PET parts breakdown for the later cars with locking seatbacks (not sure of the years)you will find a small metal piece that can be welded on to provide the holes for the pins to lock into. Obviously someone put later style seatbacks into your earlier car.

You have to pull on the red knob so that the locking pin goes into the seat bracket. Then push the seatback upright and the pin should drop into the hole that is in the black metal bracket between the two seats.

The problem is his car doesn't have the bracket with the holes installed in
his earlier car. A larger later piece with the holes in it can be welded in place of the hinge piece in his car. This is what the later weld in piece looks like. I think the part# can be found in the PET for the later cars
'86-'89

edit: found the part# 911 501 041 02 FLOOR SEAT SUPPORT $23.25 Shows as NLA, but the $236 one is available YIKES!!

Looks like part number 91152256160.

Also looks like it might be NLA.

I will of course try the OEM path first, but your bracket seems to be different from the one uwanna has posted. is that a custom one?

No, this is standard on my '87.

You don't specify your year of car. It sounds like you have a '70's car that did not have the bracket with the holes for the pins. That's because cars from that era didn't use those knobs and pins to keep the seatbacks up. Rather, they had a strap on them that snapped onto the rear parcel shelf. So it seems like a PO took newer seatbacks that have the knobs and pins and put them in your car which was made for seatbacks that had the strap.

Early models solved this issue by putting snaps in. It is easy to add a female snap to the seat back and then a male one to the cross piece.

yeah, sorry for not providing sufficient information. my car is '86 and the orange interior is put from the '89 car. had a look at the original black backrests and you are correct - there are no red pins on them. this is what got me really confused, I didn't realize earlier models could have no way to secure the rear seat backrests in place.

thank you for your answers, my options are pretty clear now.

Smile Allen wrench

I had a similar problem on my '87 Carrera. The red plastic knob came off the metal shaft. In my case, it had just unscrewed and the red knob wasn't damaged. I was able to use a 5mm (or 7/32") L-shaped Allen wrench to push the metal shaft back out from the opposite side. That easily exposed enough of the threaded portion of the metal shaft to enable me to screw the red knob back on. It was nice to be able to do a 0-cost repair.
