The effects of a broken belt Re: idiots guide #2

Well I drained the oil and pulled the sump plate and here's what I found. They are iron or steel and not brass or Al. dtw and I are thinking it's rings or cylinder material. I'm still not sure the FT will be ready to go come sat. All depends on how bad this is.

Weird, looks a lot like the results of running a drill through something, or shaving the edge off of something. Very weird, I am curious to know what these are part of.

Good luck

well I talked to zuffhausen and dtw and they belive it's toast. I'm starting to think the same thing. They/we are theorising that the fan stoped, the cylinders, rings and pistons overheated and the shavings are from the rings cutting the cylinders. Those peices are actually peices of the cylinder wall. Since those pieces have been through the whole pressure system the whole engine's has to be tore down.

any second opinions?

If you where cutting the cylinder walls I would think the compression would be low and you would be burning oil. Is that happening? Have you done a compression check. I would say a tear down is in order but I would be temped to buy a 3.0 or 3.2 from some of these guys sticking 3.6's in their cars.

Tim, that's a bummer. I'm looking forward to you and your FT getting back on the road soon.

I haven't done a compression check but I think that those shavings are conclusive enough to warrent a teardown.

Jim,
I was really hoping to be on the road to but it looks like it'll be a few month minimum. I have an unknown 2.0T motor than I may drop in as a temp and run that for awhile while I rebuild the 2.4

It all really depends on expenses. The three options I see right now are stock 2.4 (blah boring), 2.5S (interesting and unique) and 2.7RS (kick ass but lots of people have done it)

Ahhh, but lots of people have done it for a very good reason.

Sorry to hear about your engine.

Tim, Sorry to hear about the bad news. Don't worry we can build the FT faster, stronger, and better than before.

When are you planning a rebuild? I happen to have a 3.0 under wraps that may be useful while you rebuild. I am planning to need it back by August.

Jamie

Jamie,
If I do more than just a stock 2.4 rebuild it'll take me about 6 months to build up the cash so thanks for the offer but I'll probably use the 2.0 if I can.
